Long before any compass was invented, the first Polynesian navigators crossed the largest ocean on Earth guided by stars, wind, and the flight of birds. They were so attuned to their world that the very words they spoke were carved from it.

West is To'o'a o te rā, "where the sun goes down" which in contemporary Tahitian became Topara'a mahana, simply meaning “sunfall”.

We watch the same horizon they did. Every evening from our shore, the sky over Moorea reminds us that some things have never needed a better name.
