We normally leave it to our guests to enjoy Jim Thorpe's Fall Fest, but with such a beautiful day and such easy access to the D&L trail, we decided to take a short bike ride into town to see what all the fuss is always about 😉... ❤️ A Little Bit of News from Lizard Creek Inn ❤️

After much thought, we have some big news to share with our Lizard Creek Inn family.

We’ve made the bittersweet decision to put Lizard Creek Inn on the market and begin looking for its next owners.

This certainly wasn’t an easy decision. Owning and operating the inn has been such a special chapter of our lives. We’ve welcomed so many wonderful people through our doors, shared celebrations and quiet getaways, and made memories that we will treasure for years to come. Many of you arrived as guests and became friends along the way — and for that, we are incredibly grateful.

So, why sell?

Our family is growing, and we’ve reached a point where we want to be able to spend more time with the people we love most.

The inn has given us so much, but running a B&B — even one we absolutely love — requires a significant commitment of time. As our family grows and our priorities evolve, we find ourselves wanting a little more freedom to be present for the birthdays, holidays, family gatherings, spontaneous visits and everyday moments that become the memories we cherish most.

That doesn't make saying goodbye to Lizard Creek Inn any easier. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. This place has become a very special part of our lives, and finding the right person to carry it forward is incredibly important to us.

But for now… it’s business as usual! 🦎

We anticipate the process of finding the right new owners will take some time. Until then, we will continue welcoming guests, taking reservations and enjoying the inn just as we always have.

So if you’ve been thinking about coming back for another visit… this is your invitation! 🏠❤️

The village of Andreas grew from the landholdings of the Andreas family.

The Lineage:

The family lineage in Pennsylvania began with Martin Andreas, who emigrated from the Alsace region along the Rhine and landed in Philadelphia in 1749.

The Settlement:

In 1793, his sons Jacob and Peter Andreas jointly bought and occupied a local farm tract in the area. Another brother, William Andreas, purchased an adjacent farm in the township in 1807. Later, a descendant named Adam Andrew established a prominent store along Lizard Creek.

As the community grew around these family homesteads and businesses, the settlement adopted their surname.

Andreas was not a coal town; it was a farming and quarry village that relied heavily on the railroad.

Geography and Economy:

While it is situated in the southeastern corner of Schuylkill County (a region heavily associated with anthracite coal mining), Andreas sits in the Lizard Creek Valley at the northern foot of Blue Mountain. The local geology and economy focused on agriculture and slate quarries rather than coal extraction.

The Railroad Connection:

It developed into a prominent local shipping hub because it served as a station and depot on the Lehigh and New England Railroad line, allowing regional farmers and slate quarry operators to transport their goods to larger markets.

Why is it Pronounced "Andreez"?

According to the official West Penn Township Government Historical Record, the name is locally pronounced "ANN-dreez". This phonetic shift is the result of Pennsylvania Dutch (Pennsylvania German) linguistic evolution. The region was heavily populated by German-speaking immigrants whose dialect altered the stress patterns of European names over generations. Instead of retaining the traditional German or biblical three-syllable pronunciation ("ahn-DRAY-us"), local speech patterns flattened the vowels and drew out the final syllable into a long "ee" sound, resulting in the distinct regional pronunciation used by locals. 💙♥️

Since we purchased the inn over 5 years ago, we've often repeated the lore that our little attached Andreas Post Office is "One of the oldest continually run post offices in PA."... often believing this fact fell within the creative boundaries of made-up statistics. Today I decided to run the question through AI ... and guess what?!?....

"Yes, it is entirely accurate to call the Andreas branch one of the oldest continually running post offices in Pennsylvania.While it does not date back to the 1700s colonial era, its 1883 founding makes it highly significant when looked at in the context of the entire state system:
1. In the Top 20% Statewide Pennsylvania has roughly 1,630 active post offices, which is one of the highest totals of any state in the nation. Because hundreds of rural post offices were established much later in the 1900s, an opening date of 1883 places the Andreas line well within the oldest 15% to 20% of all operating branches across the Commonwealth.
2. A Century of Continuity - The most important part of your statement is the word "continually." Throughout the late 19th and 20th centuries, thousands of small-town Pennsylvania post offices were permanently shut down or consolidated as highways replaced railroads. For a small village branch like Andreas to keep its doors open and maintain uninterrupted service for over 140 years is a rare historic feat.
