🐻 A wild reminder for our guests!

Last week, one of our guests at On Mountain Time had a close encounter of the furry kind. Two of their three cars were locked — but one wasn't, and a bear (or two!) found the kids' leftover snacks inside. No damage to any of the vehicles, but plenty of paw prints in and out of the unlocked car told the story.

A friendly reminder for anyone staying with us 🙏

✅ Never leave food, drinks, or snacks in your car
✅ Lock every vehicle, even for quick trips
✅ Store trash and coolers inside — not on decks or in truck beds
✅ A cracked window won't stop a determined bear — keep it closed

Bears around here are smart, strong, and always hungry. A little caution goes a long way toward protecting your car (and your snacks) 😄

Guests spoke, and we listened! Seating in this new build was a real puzzle to solve, but we think we cracked it — the main living area went from comfortably seating five to now comfortably seating seven. And don’t forget, there’s also a lower-level family room for extra space to spread out.

Tomorrow marks 200 years of a massive landslide that thundered down through Crawford Notch, killing the entire Willey family. In one of history's strangest twists, it spared the very house they had fled. The tragedy captured the nation's imagination, inspiring newspaper accounts, paintings, and even a Nathaniel Hawthorne short story ("The Ambitious Guest"), and helped launch the White Mountains as one of America's first great tourist destinations. In many ways, the story you're reading right now is part of why people still flock to these mountains 200 years later.

Tomorrow, August 28th, join the New Hampshire State Parks at 11am at Crawford Notch State Park for a commemoration and presentation honoring the Willey family, followed by the unveiling of brand-new interpretive signage telling their story for future visitors.

Nothing makes a stay feel more like home than a wagging tail! Today we're celebrating all the good boys and girls who've explored our rentals with their humans.

Okay, I have to share this — I had absolutely NO idea this existed.

There's a railbike tour about 30 minutes from our place, in Silver Lake (Madison). You pedal these carts along old train tracks past ponds and through the woods, mountains in the background the whole way. Been hosting guests in this area for a decade and somehow missed it completely.

Video below — adding this to my local recommendations for anyone staying with us. 📍 ~30 min drive.
