Exciting news! The Timber Baron Inn is transferring ownership. When we built this beautiful Inn we were newly married with a lot of energy. We loved channeling that energy into running the Inn and meeting all of our great guests. In the 9 years that we’ve run it, we have added four babies to the family! (Our 8 month old didn’t make the picture cause she was taking one of her many naps) We loved raising our kids at the Inn. The location is pretty close to paradise! As the kids are getting older we want to be able to focus on them more so we are so happy to be able to transfer ownership to a wonderful lady. (I’m sure she will introduce herself soon!) We are excited to see what she does with the place and we’re sure her new energy will make it even better! Thank you to all of our guests that taught us so much and gave us a fun adventure for the first 9 years of our marriage!

Ice caves update: conditions remain on track to welcome visitors to the National Lakeshore ice caves on Monday, 2/16.

Rangers are closely monitoring the weather system expected to arrive midweek, including the possibility of high winds on Tuesday afternoon. High winds travelling across massive Lake Superior can break even very thick ice, and safety closures may occur if ice conditions or visibility become dangerous. Visitors are encouraged to pay the event fee on the day of their visit before arriving at the park, but not before. Visitors can expect updates about the ice caves being open or closed by 7:30am each day during the event.

We are so excited for the ice caves to open for the first time in over 10 years! Make sure to check the website listed in the post for the most up to date info about them. Let the adventures begin!

Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is expected to open the ice caves near Meyers Beach for visitation beginning on Feb. 16, 2026, if current ice conditions remain stable. The ice caves remain closed until Feb. 16. The Meyers Beach parking lot is currently closed to vehicle traffic and parking. Wisconsin DOT has prohibited parking on Hwy 13. Beginning Feb 16, visitor access is via county-run shuttles.

This winter event occurs only when conditions meet minimum safety thresholds. Park officials stress that public safety is the highest priority and conditions can change rapidly. Visitor access may close with little notice if conditions deteriorate.

Trip Planning:
Visiting the Apostle Islands ice caves is a stunning but challenging winter adventure. Be ready for a 2–6 mile round trip hike on uneven lake ice with no shelter, water, and limited cell service. Dress for harsh winter conditions. Standing water on top of the ice is possible. No on-site parking is available at Meyers Beach—visitors must shuttle from off-site locations to the trailhead. A $5 per person/day fee (ages 16+; under 16 free) must be paid online. Additional fees apply for off-site parking and shuttles. Parking and shuttle fees are separate from the NPS Ice Caves event fee and are not charged by the National Park Service.

Conditions can change quickly. Closures may happen anytime for safety. Always check official updates before you travel: go.nps.gov/IceCaves, call the ice line at (715) 779-3398 x3, or visit facebook.com/apostleislandsnps
