Episode 14: Package Inspection
The Department reminds citizens that delivery to a residential address does not constitute delivery to a specific human.
All incoming materials remain subject to inspection.
Visual examination, scent analysis, and preliminary snack determination may occur before human authorization is obtained.
Interference with an active package inspection may result in additional scrutiny.
The Department appreciates your cooperation.

DEPARTMENT OF POODLE AFFAIRS
SPECIAL BULLETIN 07
RECOVERY OPS

Following a seven-day hospitalization, Brian has been returned to Department custody.

The transfer was immediately detected by every poodle in the building.

Normal greeting protocols collapsed.

Management temporarily lost control of the scene.

Lilith assumed the closest available position beside Brian and has shown little interest in surrendering it.

The Department considers this an appropriate allocation of resources.

Recovery operations are now underway.

Current directives include rest, medication, getting up and moving, eating something occasionally, using the incentive spirometer, and resisting the apparently powerful human urge to do too much simply because something hurts less today than it did yesterday.

Compliance has been mixed.

Poodle supervision has therefore been increased.

Management Dog is monitoring progress.

Lu C Fur has volunteered for medication oversight despite having no medical qualifications and an alarming interest in anything stored in a bottle.

Sleeping Dog has joined the recovery team and is demonstrating the Department-approved resting technique several hours at a time.

Lilith remains assigned to close protection.

The Department recognizes that recovery does not happen all at once.

A little farther today.

A little less pain tomorrow.

One ordinary thing returned at a time.

Seven days ago, an ordinary afternoon changed in an instant.

Now the work runs in the other direction.

Not in an instant.

Piece by piece.

The Department has therefore issued its latest finding:

Healing takes time.

You don’t have to do it alone.

Brian remains under poodle supervision until further notice.

Given current staffing levels, further notice may be permanent.

SPECIAL BULLETIN 06
ALTERED CONDITIONS
During his seven-day hospitalization, Brian made several observations that have proven difficult for the Department to verify.
The first involved a dark, rounded space that appeared to be covered in black felt.
Inside were three sets of feet.
Black socks. Black pants.
Brian remembers looking at it and thinking that when he opened his eyes, he would discover what the strange black corner actually was.
He opened them.
Hospital wall.
Curtain.
Nothing black.
No feet.
On another occasion, he found himself looking into something resembling a room or cell made from spray foam, complete with openings and people inside.
Again, it seemed perfectly real.
Again, opening his eyes returned him to an ordinary hospital room.
The Department has conducted an extensive review.
No black room has been located.
The three individuals wearing black socks remain unidentified.
No spray-foam detention facility appears on any approved Department floor plan.
Management Dog has requested additional documentation.
Lu C Fur has requested access.
Sleeping Dog has declined to comment, primarily because he was asleep.
The Department is not prepared to determine whether these observations were the product of medication, exhaustion, injury, sleep, or some previously undisclosed division of Maine Medical Center.
There is, however, one detail investigators cannot ignore.
All of this occurred during a hospitalization lasting exactly:
Seven days.
The Department was initially prepared to classify this as coincidence.
Then somebody looked at Brian’s shirt.
The investigation has been expanded.
Some files are opened intentionally.
Others apparently open themselves.

FIELD MEDICINE

The initial assessment was considerably worse than the patient had anticipated.

Five broken ribs.

One broken clavicle.

One punctured lung.

Brian had known about the clavicle. The rest apparently neglected to identify themselves at the scene.

With no cell service, no clear way to tell rescuers where they were, and roughly two and a half miles separating them from accessible roads, Brian and Dale initially tried to work their way toward help.

A little riding. A stop. Another attempt.

Eventually it became clear that Brian wasn’t getting out that way.

Dale went for help.

After an earlier search of roughly eight houses had found nobody home, this time he returned remarkably quickly with news that help was coming.

Right behind him came a side-by-side carrying two paramedics.

The Department considers their timing excellent.

Brian was moved by side-by-side toward road access, transferred to an ambulance, taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital, and ultimately transferred to Maine Medical Center.

There, the full inventory of damage became considerably clearer.

The Department recognizes determination as an admirable trait.

It would nevertheless like to clarify one important point:

When the conditions change, the plan is allowed to change too.

Sometimes getting yourself out is the plan.

Sometimes the right plan is letting someone come get you.

Management would also like it entered into the record that the human survived all of this only to find himself under the supervision of approximately ten medical professionals.

The Department considered this an encouraging start.

Poodle oversight would follow.

INCIDENT

A routine ride. Lunch in Kingfield. A different trail home.

About an hour into the return trip, on an ordinary gravel trail, Brian intentionally avoided a large rock.

What happened next remains under investigation.

The four-wheeler left the trail and came to rest upside down. Brian knew immediately that his clavicle was broken. What he did not know was that he had also broken five ribs and punctured a lung.

With no cell service, no clear way to direct help to their location, and roughly two and a half miles between them and accessible roads, getting closer to help seemed like the only practical option.

It wasn't.

Eventually, help came to them.

Seven days later, Brian came home.

Seven.

The Department has taken particular interest in that number.

No definitive cause of the accident has been established. There may have been another rock. There may have been a problem with the machine. There may have been several things working together.

But one finding does not require further investigation:

You don't have to be reckless for life to change in an instant.

Sometimes an ordinary day is enough.

The Department's investigation continues.

And, given the seven-day hospitalization, Management has opened a separate file.

A little over 100 miles on the four-wheeler yesterday.

Apparently I didn't get enough because we're heading back out again today. đŸ˜„

Not many complaints from this side of the handlebars.
