Did you know that a pig nearly started a war between the United States and Great Britain?

At the time, both countries claimed San Juan Island because the 1846 Oregon Treaty had left the exact maritime boundary unclear. In June 1859, an American settler named Lyman Cutlar shot and killed a Hudson’s Bay Company pig that kept rooting in his garden. When British authorities threatened to arrest him, the dispute escalated dramatically.

The U.S. sent soldiers to the island. Britain sent Royal Marines and warships. The two countries ended up occupying San Juan Island jointly for 12 years—without firing a shot at each other. The dispute was finally settled in 1872, when Kaiser Wilhelm I of Germany arbitrated the boundary in favor of the United States.

And yes—the only casualty of the whole “war” was the pig
