Michigan pronunciation test: 😭🌲🚗
You know you’re from Michigan if you can pronounce:
• Ishpeming
• Ypsilanti
• Mackinac
• Charlevoix
• Sault Ste. Marie
• Ontonagon
• Escanaba
• Cheboygan
• Kalamazoo
• Bois Blanc
• Sebewaing
• Dowagiac
…correctly. 💀
Because Michigan town names aren’t pronounced the way they’re spelled.
They’re pronounced the way somebody’s great-grandpa said them once while ice fishing in 1962… and the entire state collectively agreed: “Yeah alright, that’s official now.” 😭
Outsiders pull up saying: “Is it Mack-in-ACK?” “No.” “Char-leh-VOX?” “Absolutely not.” “Boys Blank?” “Please step away from the Great Lakes immediately.” 💀
And somehow every Michigander instantly knows who actually grew up here based entirely on how casually they say: “MACK-in-aw,”
“Yip-suh-LAN-tee,”
or
“Saulte Saint Marie? Nah… just call it Soo.” 🌲😂
Half these names came from Native American and French origins.
The other half sound like somebody sneezed into a map during a snowstorm and everyone just committed to it. 😭
And don’t even get started on Mackinac.
Because Michigan residents will correct your pronunciation faster than they’ll correct their own family members. 💀
One wrong “Mackinack Island” and suddenly three strangers at the gas station turn around in unison like: “You mean MACK-in-aw.” 🚗🌊
But if you can say all of these without hesitating? Congratulations.
You’re either: • from Michigan
• married into Michigan
• or you’ve spent enough summers here arguing about the best beach town while dodging potholes on I-75. 🚗💀🌲

Lake or river?

In Iron County, you don’t have to choose, you can do both.

Calm lakes for easy paddles, winding rivers for longer adventures. It all depends on how you want to spend your day on the water.

What’s your style?

🎣 Get ready to cast a line during Michigan’s Summer Free Fishing Weekend

With warm weather, open access, and plenty of shoreline, this weekend offers a great chance to try fishing or get back out on the water.

As part of Michigan’s Three Free Weekend, guests can also enjoy state parks, boating access sites, and ORV trails without extra permits, making it an ideal time to explore the outdoors.
