Memorial Day weekend shows you Greenwich from the outside. The first weekend of June shows you what's behind the gates.

If we haven't met, I'm Colin. Fourth generation at Stanton House Inn, here in Greenwich.

The first weekend of June is Grandiflora. The Greenwich Botanical Center has been running it for almost 70 years. For one Saturday, five private gardens open to the public. These are back country properties you won't see from the road, and they're not on anyone's typical Greenwich itinerary.

It builds across the weekend. Friday night is a back country soirée, cocktails and hors d'oeuvres at a private estate, with time to wander the grounds while it's still light out. Saturday is the garden tour, self-guided across all five. Sunday keeps the country weekend going, with the Riding and Trails horse show in the morning and a polo match in the afternoon.

When you grow up in a bed and breakfast, your parents' bedroom is the only room in the whole building that's actually private. Being called into that room meant one of two things. Something good was about to happen, or you were in trouble. Most of the time it was the second one.

That serious, grown-up back bedroom is now Room 16.

For a while it held its own. Then I noticed it was getting passed over more than it used to. A thoughtful guest eventually told me why. They hadn't slept well. The room was noisier in the morning than they expected. It wasn't delivering what the rest of the house promised.

I could have been defensive. Instead I thought, they're right, and this is the room to fix.

We started with the windows. Then a wool rug to absorb the sound and warm the floor. Then a rattan chair and a small antique writing desk I had honestly planned to skip, until I saw it and couldn't.

Room 16 isn't a showpiece. It's the small, serious room you trust for a good night's sleep. If that's the kind of room you always end up loving, this one's yours.

A quick correction for anyone planning a Hudson Valley trip.

The Woodstock Festival did not actually happen in Woodstock, New York. It happened in Bethel, about 60 miles away. So if you're driving up expecting a pilgrimage site, you'll be disappointed and a little confused.

That said, Woodstock is still worth visiting. Just not for the reasons most people think.

The town today is more interesting than the festival mythology suggests. There's a Tibetan Buddhist monastery — Karma Triyana Dharmachakra — sitting on a steep road up Overlook Mountain, with a hiking trail right across the street. The shops are genuinely unique. Not tourist-trap unique. Actually unique. Vintage stores, artisan boutiques, bookshops that look like they've been there forever. The food range is surprising for a town this size. Farm-to-table, Italian, vegan comfort food. Garcia's has a sprawling outdoor area that's hard to leave once you've sat down.

It's eclectic, artsy, and a little quirky. And honestly, way more interesting because it isn't frozen in 1969.

If you're planning a Hudson Valley day trip and you want something that surprises you, Woodstock is a good answer. Just don't go looking for Hendrix memorabilia. He was never there either.

A short note on Provincetown, for anyone planning a Cape trip from the New York area.

My first visit was a two-night trip. The drive was about four hours each way. The town itself was fantastic. But the math didn't work. Too much time in the car. Not enough time in town.

I think about Provincetown differently now. It's not a quick weekend stop. It's a place to anchor a longer Cape trip, or the final stop on a New England coastal road trip where you want to feel like you've reached the end of the map for a few days.

If you're sketching out a summer or fall route, give it the time it deserves.

Last January, during a cold snap, a pipe froze in Room Fourteen. Then it thawed. Then it leaked into the carpet.

Old houses make their own renovation schedules.

We had planned to update that room anyway. The pipe just moved everything up the calendar, and not particularly on my terms. I described it at the time as the room rising from the ashes like a sopping wet phoenix.

The room came out better than it would have if we had done it on our own timetable.
I'm not sure that justifies the January it caused, but here we are.

Room 38 is at the very top of the house. It's a bit of a hike to get there. Our guests keep saying it's worth it.

The top floor was almost certainly nurseries when this was a private home. We lost the architectural plans a long time ago, so I can't prove it. But we leaned into that side of the story. Deep blue-green walls. Wrought iron. Bird prints and old maps on the walls.

I finished decorating it and realized I'd basically designed the room I wanted as a kid.
Just with a much bigger budget than any child should have.

Not the fanciest room we have. Might be the coziest.

Walk-in shower, glass door, plenty of room to freshen up. If you're anything like me, it might feel like home.

The advice I give every guest headed to Newport: one mansion per trip. Maybe two if you're really into Gilded Age interiors.

More than that and they start to blur together. Honestly, that can happen before you've finished the first one, depending on your mood.

What I'd do with the rest of the day instead: the Cliff Walk, the Ocean Drive loop, Fort Adams, and one evening walk through town after the lights come on.

That last one is the part most people don't plan for. It's also the part they remember.
