Most places make you choose between three versions of imperfect.

Polished and forgettable. Private, but on your own when something goes sideways. Charming right up until you're making conversation before coffee.

I've never found a clean label for what we are.

Most people equate Greenwich, Connecticut with rich people. Mansions, yacht clubs, money, that kind of thing.

I grew up here, and the wealth is honestly the part I care about the least.

Before the money showed up, this was a rocky border town that changed hands between the Dutch and the English. A Revolutionary War general made his famous escape on horseback right through the middle of it. The granite under our foundation came out of a quarry that is now a public beach.

None of that is the Greenwich people picture.

The mansions are fine. The history is the better story, and it's the one I'd rather tell you.

A quick one for anyone who shops Greenwich Avenue and would rather skip the crowds.

There is a calm window most days when the Avenue is quiet and you can actually browse. No weaving around other people plodding along.

And there is one day a week most people write off. I think it is one of the better days to go. I explain why in the video.

Something I notice a few times a week.

A guest comes in with the week still on their mind. The drive. I-95, which is its own sort of test.

Somewhere between the front door and the desk, you can watch their shoulders drop.

The best room in the house isn't the most dramatic one. It's the one where the layout just works.

That took me a while to admit. The dramatic rooms are easy to love at first glance. The Pomeroy Suite is quieter, and it's the one that taught me what a good room is really for.

I won't give away why here. That part lands better on camera.

Most people know the front of the inn. The white facade, the flag, the brick walk.

My favorite part is out back.

A path of flat stones runs past the hydrangeas and the butterfly w**d. It ends at a round stone moon gate set into an old wall. Green grows over everything. It is the quietest corner we have.

We filmed the whole property in June this year. Gardens, blooms, the ruins out back. No narration. Just the place.

If you're staying with us and want one very good shopping afternoon in downtown Greenwich, here's the short version.

Leave around 2:00. Walk down to the top of Greenwich Avenue and start there. Get a coffee. Sit for fifteen minutes and let the Avenue go by before you do anything else.

Then head downhill toward the harbor.

There's one stop along the way I send guests into for ten minutes, and it isn't to buy anything. I'll let the video explain that one.

The rooms that work best aren't always the most dramatic. They're the ones where the layout just works. You feel it more than you notice it.

The Pomeroy Suite is that room. It took me a while to understand why. Once I did, it changed how I think about every room in the house.
