When people hear I enjoy a good ghost story, they always ask about Dudleytown.

It's up in Cornwall, about an hour and a quarter from Stanton House Inn. Probably the most famous haunted place in Connecticut.

My honest answer isn't what they're expecting. It's in the clip, and the full ghost stories video is in the comments.

One practical note: it's private property, and the state police fine trespassers.

A Connecticut ghost story almost nobody outside of Connecticut knows.

1647. The New Haven Colony sends its last good ship to England. It leaves the harbor listing to one side and never comes back.

Six months later, the colonists are standing on the shoreline, and they watch it sail out of the clouds.

Room 3 and Room 5 sit on the same floor, a few steps apart. Same private entry. Same easy arrival for guests who like to come and go quietly.

And they have almost nothing else in common.

Room 3 carries the memory of the house entertaining itself. Room 5 carries the memory of someone living here. Some rooms inherit their character from architecture. Others inherit it from daily life.

That's the thing about a house that's been in one family for four generations. Rooms don't have to do the same job. They get to be specific.

A lot of you have watched these videos and read the newsletters for months before you ever stay with us. Some of you feel like you know me already, even though we’ve never met.

That matters to me. But here’s the honest part. It only matters because I’m still here.

If someone bought the inn and I left, every video and every newsletter would be useless to the new owner. You trust me and my family, not the building. I understand completely why no one would pay for that at closing.

West Cornwall is a stop. It is not a destination.

There's a red covered bridge, and it's the whole reason to pull over. Walk it, take your pictures, watch the river run underneath, glance at the couple of shops in town.

Room 38 is way up at the top of the house.

Back when Stanton House Inn was a private home, the rooms on that floor were probably nurseries. We don't have the original plans anymore, but that's where children's rooms usually lived.

When I redesigned it, I leaned into that story. Deep blue-green walls. An iron bed. Bird prints and old maps. Small nods to travel, as if the room belonged to a curious child in a well-traveled family.

It's the bedroom I might have designed for myself as a kid, if I'd had a much bigger budget. It's been one of our most popular rooms ever since we finished it.

What surprised me was what guests said afterward. Not "the design is amazing." Just, "This room feels right."

One guest got stuck here during a January snowstorm. Not ideal, on paper. She figured she'd be bored out of her mind.

She had two days in the house while the snow came down. I'll let the clip tell you how that went.

Guests ask me all the time if Stanton House Inn is haunted. It pretty much always makes me chuckle.

We've even had actual paranormal investigators stay here. You can hear what they told us in the clip.
