Chassahowitzka Hotel private message for assistance with booking. From 1969 to 1990 the building sat vacant until it was purchased by a couple from Lakeland, Fl.

David and Kim Strickland are the fourth generation of the Strickland Family to own and operate the Chassahowitzka Hotel. The Hotel was originally started by David’s great-grandparents Ben and Eliza Smith in 1910, and was family operated from 1910 until 1969, when the family closed the business. In 2000 David and Kim had the opportunity to purchase the Hotel back into the family. In 2001 the “Old Hotel”, as it was called, was completely remodeled, taking it down to its original pine and cypress, re-engineered with all new amenities, and set up to accommodate anything from weekly corporate group and nightly family stays, to business dinners, family reunions, weddings, and weekend retreats.

For decades in the 1800s, people in Tallahassee swore they could see a volcano smoking in the swamps to the south. 🌫️

The column of smoke rose from somewhere deep in the wild, roadless wetlands of Wakulla and Jefferson counties, close to the Gulf. Fishermen out on the water said they used it as a landmark, and folks around the region simply called it the Wakulla Volcano. On clear days it was said you could spot it from miles away, a thin gray plume climbing out of the trees.

The swamp was so thick with t**i, cypress, and sawgrass that nobody seemed able to reach the source. Expeditions set out to find it, and the popular story says at least one newspaper sent a reporter in search of the smoke, only for him to come back sick and empty handed. 🔍

Then, according to local accounts, the smoke faded away after the great Charleston earthquake of 1886 rattled the Southeast. Ever since, people have offered explanations: a smoldering underground peat fire, gas seeping from the earth, or even moonshiners keeping their stills hidden deep in the swamp. There are a few popular theories, and folks around the Big Bend still enjoy debating which one fits best.
