The hills are still mostly green, but here and there, the trees are beginning to show their first hints of gold. The river is still warm, flowing quietly alongside the trail, while the sound of the water and the soft rhythm of your own footsteps make it easy to slow down and breathe a little deeper.

No crowds. No hurry. Just a peaceful walk, the changing season, and the sounds of nature all around you.

Thanksgiving is around the corner!

Imagine, morning begins slowly, the smell of coffee brewing, pies cooling on the counter, and the first voices of family arriving at the door.

Before long, the house is full. Children weave between rooms, old stories are told again, and everyone gathers in the kitchen to sneak a taste before dinner. The table fills with favorite dishes, hands join in gratitude, and for a little while, everyone you love is together in one place.

As evening settles in, the plates are cleared, leftovers are packed away, and sleepy goodbyes are exchanged. After a beautiful day filled with family, laughter, and far too much food, there’s something especially nice about returning to a quiet space of your own.

A warm cabin. A comfortable bed. And all the peace you need to sleep off that second helping of pie.

The Black Hills are starting to show their autumn colors! 🍂💛

This photo from Spearfish today is a beautiful glimpse of the season unfolding—golden leaves tucked among the evergreens, turning an ordinary drive into a reason to slow down and take the scenic route.

Hot Springs is usually right behind, and we can’t wait to watch those colors arrive here at Highland Meadows. There’s something special about fall in the Hills: crisp mornings, winding roads, and a little more beauty around every bend.

Peaceful mornings, passing wildlife, summer wildflowers, and a comfortable tipi waiting at the end of the day—this review captures so much of what we hope a stay at Highland Meadows will feel like. 🤎

“Beautiful area! So much to see and do. At the resort itself we saw plenty of deer and wild turkeys. I also loved the wildflowers and how peaceful it felt. The owners are great and make sure you have everything you need. The whole resort was well kept. We stayed in a tipi and it was quite comfortable. The mini fridge kept food very cold, even during the summer. Snacks and coffee were provided. It was nice to have the laundry room so close by, and we had our own bathroom, which was spotless. Whenever I make it back to the area, I'd stay here again!”

Winter is coming to Highland Meadows. ❄️

Soon the meadow will be covered in white, the trees will be dusted with snow, and Hot Springs will settle into that peaceful stillness only winter can bring.

These are some of our favorite winter moments from the past few years—snow quietly falling over the resort, familiar places around town transformed, and mornings when the whole world seemed softer.

Before long, we’ll be waking up to views like these again. Warm drinks, cozy fires, steaming riverbanks, glowing winter skies, and snowflakes drifting past the windows…

We can hardly wait. 🤍

Tipi season is coming to a close—but there’s still time for one last adventure! 🍂

We still have plenty of open dates between now and October 16, when our tipis are scheduled to close for the season, weather permitting.

The next few weeks are bringing beautiful tipi weather—warm fall afternoons, cool evenings, and even a few chances to fall asleep listening to the rain against the canvas. There’s something unforgettable about watching a storm roll across the Black Hills, then settling into a cozy bed beneath the twinkle lights.

Don’t let tipi season slip away without experiencing it for yourself. 🤎

Feel the thunder of the herd at the annual Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup! 🦬

On September 25, nearly 1,300 buffalo will thunder across the prairie as cowboys, cowgirls, and park staff guide them into the corrals. It’s an unforgettable Black Hills tradition—and something everyone should experience at least once.

Highland Meadows Resort is almost completely booked for Roundup weekend, but we still have a few tipis available! After a full day of excitement, come back to a peaceful night beneath the stars and enjoy a little more of that Old West feeling.

The Buffalo Roundup Arts Festival also runs September 24–26, making it the perfect weekend for a Black Hills getaway.

“The big things, like stunning views and epic sunsets are a basic expectation at a place like this, and it delivers. It's the little things that really make it stand out. Our cabin had a variety of phone charging options. The Keurig had several pod options to use, including packing your own. Coffee beans, a grinder, and a French press. A sound generator in the bedroom. A top quality make up removing cloth in a nice bathroom. Cool wooden games beneath the TV. Both TVs have streaming services installed. Outside there is a stocked fire pit, with a hose conveniently close. There is a gas grill, plus gas fire pit tables. There is a corn hole set, a horse shoe game, and a large bin with yard games. There are likely many cool things I'm forgetting. The point is, virtually anything you could want is here.”
