Restoration Project at Pepper Ranch Preserve

Carolina willow (Salix caroliniana) is a native plant — however, due to changing water levels and lack of fire , it can cause an ecosystem imbalance. In Florida marshes, these willows spread aggressively, pushing out other native wetland plants and reducing habitat for birds, amphibians, and other wildlife that rely on open marsh.
Conservation Collier recently received funding from FWC for a marsh restoration project at the Pepper Ranch Preserve. This will restore historical marsh landscapes and bring back the native herbaceous plant cover that animal life depend on 🦢🐸
After receiving a SFWMD permit, crews used a special mechanical method to mulch down the overgrown willows. With perfect seasonal timing, rising water levels will help drown the roots, giving native marsh plants a chance to return and thrive.
🌱Stay tuned for updates on this restoration project! 🌱
