Summer in Kona doesn't announce itself.

It just is.

We know what you're thinking when you walk into a hotel room for the first time. You do a lap. You check the bed. You open the balcony door.

We built Pacific 19 for that moment.

Premium linens worth touching twice. A welcome kit with a dry bag and local snacks. A JBL speaker because the vibe matters. And a balcony that faces the Pacific, just far enough to remind you why you came.

Rinse off. Rest up. Kona is right outside.

Here's something we love about the Big Island: it looks exactly like itself.

No two towns the same. Hawi feels nothing like Hilo. Waimea feels nothing like Kona. And yet every faded sign, every hand-painted storefront, every rusted tin roof tells the same story, people built something here and meant it.

Next time you're out exploring, slow down for the facades. The Coffee Shack perched above the coast. Ishigo's, open since 1910. A barber shop window catching afternoon light in downtown Hilo.

The Big Island rewards the ones who look closely.

Here's the thing about the Big Island — you can drive through four completely different landscapes in a single afternoon. Lava desert, open ranch land, dense rainforest, and back to the coast. All before dinner.

We're 350 feet from the ocean, but the real draw is what's beyond the parking lot. Grab your keys. We'll tell you where to go.

Most people drive right past it. That's exactly why you shouldn't.

Kekaha Kai State Beach is 11.5 miles from Pacific 19 — a short drive up the coast that feels like a different world. The road in is rough, the walk takes a little effort, and the beach on the other side is almost always quiet. That's the deal.

A few things worth knowing before you go: gates lock at 7pm, no drones, no pets. Come early, pack water, and leave it the way you found it.

We'll point you in the right direction at the front desk.

Here's something worth sitting with before your trip: aloha isn't just a greeting. In Hawaiian understanding, it carries mutual respect, shared breath, a recognition of connection.

You don't have to arrive as an expert. You just have to arrive with attention.

We wrote about what thoughtful travel in Hawai'i actually looks like — the paradox, the people keeping culture alive, and what it means to engage with these islands on their own terms. It's the kind of read that changes how you show up. Link in bio.

Sometimes you need more than a room. A place to spread out, slow down, and actually feel at home.

The Ohana Suite is built for that. A separate living space, a vinyl player on the dresser, sheer curtains that let the Kona light do its thing in the morning. And when you're ready, the ocean is three minutes away.

We named it Ohana for a reason. Bring the people you love.

The trail starts in daylight — ferns pressing in from both sides, birds somewhere above you in the canopy.

Then you reach the entrance. A dark mouth carved into the earth, roots hanging from the ceiling like a chandelier, the air suddenly cooler. You step in anyway.

Inside, the walls tell you everything. Striations where molten lava once flowed in waves. Cracks where the rock eventually gave. Minerals left behind like paint on stone.

You walk deeper. Flashlights cut through the dark. Someone ahead of you stops to look up. You understand why.

Thūston Lava Tube has been here for roughly 500 years. It'll be here long after you leave. Go while you can.

You don't need a plan for this one.

Step out of Pacific 19, turn toward the water, and just walk. Three minutes and you're on Ali'i Drive — past the old banyan trees, the Kona Trolley stop, the pier where locals swim laps at dusk like it's the most natural thing in the world.

This is the part of Kona we want you to find on foot. The part that doesn't make the top-10 lists, but stays with you.
