"My dad is not an easy man to impress. He said it was the best trip of his life." 💬

A guest wrote us that after her Father's Day stay last June. She said her dad is a man who tends to say things are "fine" and "pretty good" and who had resisted being taken on a trip for years. She finally just booked it and didn't give him a choice.

He caught a mahi-mahi on the charter. He grilled it on the lanai that evening while she and her kids sat around the table and he explained, in more detail than anyone strictly needed, exactly how the fight went. She said she hadn't seen him that animated in years.

June is deep into summer season, which means summer rates at The Salty Mermaid and ideal ocean conditions for fishing. The marlin are running. The charters are available. The lanai grill is ready for whatever comes off the boat.

Poke is one of those foods that gets worse the further you get from Hawaii, which is the best argument for eating it here. 🐟

Hawaiian poke, at its traditional core, is fresh raw fish, typically ahi tuna, seasoned with sea salt, inamona (roasted kukui nut relish), and limu (seaweed). Contemporary versions have expanded significantly: shoyu poke, spicy mayo poke, kimchi poke, poke bowls with rice and various toppings. But the foundation is always the quality of the fish, and in Kona that foundation is extraordinary.

The Big Island has excellent poke options ranging from grocery store counters (don't sleep on these, some of the best poke in the state is sold next to the canned goods) to dedicated poke shops to restaurants that treat it as a serious culinary focus. Our local guide includes the spots we actually recommend.

For Father's Day, pick up a spread of poke from the local market and bring it back to the lanai. Add chips, a cold beer, and the Pacific view. Dad will not complain.

Kona is the marlin capital of the world. That's not a tagline. That's a fishing record. 🎣

The waters off the Kona Coast are consistently among the most productive big game fishing waters on earth. The Hawaiian Ridge, an underwater mountain chain that runs along the coast, creates ideal conditions for blue marlin. Current world records have been set here. The tournament season draws serious anglers from every continent.

But you don't need to be a tournament fisherman to experience it. Charter boats run daily half-day and full-day trips for groups of all experience levels.
