"My manager asked why my last quarter was my best quarter. I told him I worked from Hawaii for three weeks." 💬

A guest who does client strategy work told us this after his September extended stay. He booked three weeks at The Salty Mermaid ostensibly as a vacation with partial work, expecting to get some hours in and spend the rest of the time at the beach.

He said what actually happened was that he got more focused work hours in those three weeks than in any comparable period at home. He attributed this to the combination of no commute time, no social obligations, genuinely excellent sleep from the A/C and the memory foam bed, and the psychological effect of working in a beautiful environment where he was looking forward to his afternoon rather than dreading it.

He said his output quality was meaningfully higher than usual. He said his clients noticed.

He booked again for next September. He said it's now a business strategy.

September is a genuinely excellent month for a working vacation in Kona. Here's why the timing works specifically, not just generically. 🌴

The island is in shoulder season, which means it's quiet in the way that makes the "vacation" part of "working vacation" actually functional. The snorkel spots aren't jammed. The restaurants have tables. The roads are navigable. When your meetings end at noon and you want to be at Kahalu'u by 1:30, that's actually achievable in September in a way it isn't always in July.

The weather is still perfect. The ocean is still warm. The A/C at The Salty Mermaid still works exactly as well as it does in June. The sunset is still every night.

September rates are our summer pricing, the most accessible of the year. For a two-week or month-long working stay, that pricing difference adds up to something meaningful.

The Monday Night Football of ancient Hawaii was called konane. A strategy board game, think checkers, played on a basalt slab with smooth lava rocks. And it was taken seriously. 🌺

Papa konane boards have been found at archaeological sites across the Hawaiian Islands, some of them cut directly into natural lava outcroppings along the coast. The game was played by commoners and royalty alike, and historical accounts describe high-stakes konane matches that lasted for hours and attracted significant audiences.

The game is experiencing a quiet revival in contemporary Hawaii as part of broader efforts to preserve and transmit traditional Hawaiian practices. Some cultural centers and heritage sites offer konane instruction, and the game is taught in Hawaiian language immersion schools as part of cultural education.

At Pu'uhonua o Honaunau, several konane boards are visible on the lava platforms, worn smooth by centuries of use. Standing next to them and thinking about the hands that played across those centuries is one of those moments at that site that lingers long after you've driven back up the coast.

The WiFi situation at The Salty Mermaid is fast, reliable, and unlimited. Which matters more than people think when they're actually trying to work from a condo in Hawaii. 💻

We've hosted remote workers, digital nomads, and hybrid-schedule professionals consistently over the past few years, and the pattern is consistent: the quality of the internet connection either enables or undermines the entire "work from paradise" premise.

Our internet is set up for multiple simultaneous users doing real work tasks: video calls, large file transfers, cloud-based applications. It handles all of it without degradation, which is not something you can say about every vacation rental that claims to have "fast WiFi" in the listing.

The drive around the southern tip of the Big Island, if you have time for it, is one of the most dramatic road trips in the state. 🌋

Highway 11 from Kona heads south through coffee country, past the Place of Refuge, through the Ka'u district, and eventually to the southern tip at Ka Lae, also known as South Point, which is the southernmost point of the United States. The turnoff to South Point is a narrow road through windswept grassland, ending at a bluff where the green cliffs drop 40 feet to the deep blue Pacific below.

From South Point, the highway continues northeast toward Volcanoes National Park, the green sand beach at Papakolea , one of only four green sand beaches in the world , and eventually to Hilo on the wet side of the island.

The full loop is a long day trip. South Point alone is two hours each way from Kona.

But standing at the literal southern edge of the United States, with nothing between you and Antarctica except open ocean, is worth the drive. We include this route in the local guide for every Salty Mermaid booking.
