This rainbow was photographed from the lava rock shoreline just steps from Kanaloa at Kona. It's the kind of thing that happens here on a quiet afternoon — a passing cloud, the sun low over the water, and a full arc over the Pacific.

The resort sits on 18 acres of oceanfront land in Keauhou, a quieter pocket of the Kona coast about 13 minutes south of Kailua Village. The grounds include three pools — an oceanfront pool, an adult-only pool, and a family pool — each with an adjacent hot tub. There are BBQ areas, lighted tennis and pickleball courts, and direct access to the black lava coastline and its tidal pools.

There are things you can see on the Big Island that simply cannot be reached any other way.

These photos are from a Blue Hawaiian helicopter flight — a tour that takes you along the Kohala Coast, across the rain forests of the windward side, and sets you down at a waterfall that has no road, no trail, no foot traffic. Just water, rock, and the sound of the rotors fading as the pilot cuts the engine.

It is not a cheap afternoon. It is also not something you forget.

For guests staying in Keauhou, the Blue Hawaiian terminal at Waikoloa is about 45 minutes north — an easy drive on the Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway with the ocean on one side and the lava fields on the other. Worth building into at least a five-day itinerary.

The Big Island rewards people who are willing to move around. A car is essential, and the distances are longer than most first-timers expect — but that's the point. This island is genuinely large, genuinely varied, and largely uncrowded once you get off the obvious path.

Our two oceanfront units sit right above this. You wake up, slide open the lanai door, and this is what you're looking at.

Unit 1604 is a one-bedroom, two-bath retreat that sleeps six — ideal for a couple with kids or a small group who wants a proper kitchen, real beds, and ocean air without sacrificing comfort. $460/night when you book direct.
