Henry Flagler didn't just bring the railroad to Florida's east coast, he tried to stretch it all the way out into the ocean. 🚂

Construction on the Overseas Railroad began in 1905, an audacious plan to connect Key West to the mainland by rail, built across open water using massive concrete and steel trestles spanning the Florida Keys. Thousands of workers labored for years under brutal heat, hurricanes, and dangerous conditions, some losing their lives during the project's most difficult stretches. When it was finally completed in 1912, it was hailed as an engineering marvel, allowing trains to travel where only boats had gone before. Tragically, the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 destroyed large sections of the line beyond repair, and much of its remaining structure was later repurposed to build the Overseas Highway that still carries travelers to the Keys today.

There's something remarkable about a railroad built directly across the ocean, decades before anyone thought it was even possible. 🌊
