Palapala Hoʻomau Church is the kind of stop that quiets everything down. Tucked near Kīpahulu, about eight miles past Hāna, this small historic church was built in 1857 from limestone coral and still looks out over one of Maui’s most peaceful coastal settings.

Inside, you’ll find a striking painting of Christ in Polynesian style, wearing feather capes. Outside, beneath a Java plum tree, is the grave of , the famous aviator who made the first solo nonstop flight across the Atlantic in 1927 and later chose this quiet corner of Maui as his final resting place.

It’s beautiful, historic, and deeply still, a place to visit slowly, respectfully, and without rushing.

Kipahulu and ʻOheʻo Gulch are more than a pretty stop at the end of the Road to Hana. This remote section of East Maui was once home to thriving Hawaiian communities, with terraces, trails, house sites, and sacred places tied to generations of farming, fishing, and gathering.

The name “Seven Sacred Pools” came later as a tourism nickname and is inaccurate, but the traditional name is ʻOheʻo, often translated as “something special.”

In 1969, Kipahulu Valley and ʻOheʻo Gulch became part of Haleakalā National Park, helping protect the waterfalls, streams, coastline, and cultural sites that make this area so significant. Today, it’s a place to walk carefully, stay on marked trails, respect closures, and remember that the beauty here has a much deeper story than the view.
