Ajawah Work Day - This Saturday - Tent and Dock Day!

We're only a few weeks from campers rolling down the camp path to spend two weeks of bliss at Ajawah.

With our final push in getting camp prepared for campers, we are holding Tent & Dock Day this weekend(!) on Saturday, May 30th starting at 10 AM. Lunch will be provided.

If you would like to take a dip in Linwood Lake or help put up the few remaining tents / assist any of the other various tasks left to get camp ready, please join us and bring work clothes, work gloves, closed-toe shoes, a swimsuit / towel / change of clothes, water, and sunscreen.

We had a great turnout last work day and cannot express enough thanks and how overwhelming it was to see Ajawah folks come together and get so much done around camp. Most of the tents are already up!

Hmong Friends. By Dave Moore.

When the Hmong kids first came to Edison, they seemed lost and frightened. They needed a friend in America. I thought I could be that friend. But they saw that I needed a friend, too. They reached out to me and took me into their family. The rest is history.

I once met an old Lao man, a monk. He was a refugee and a special teacher in the Minneapolis schools. I told him I had a lot of Hmong friends. He said, “If a Hmong person is your friend, he will die for you.” I said, “I know that. It’s very true.”

One time I came home and as I stepped inside – oops! – I must have left my door unlocked, or maybe they got in through a window: The whole place was alive, crawling with Hmong kids. They had a Hu Plig, a Hmong blessing ceremony all set up ready to start. The Hu Plig says, welcome home, you’re one of us now, part of the family, as Hmong as we are. They stood me up at the head of my dining-room table and one-by-one they filed up and tied a short piece of white yarn to my wrist, wishing me long life, happiness, etc..

I could only say, “I love you guys” over and over as they came by.
