When the Upperville Garden Club decorates your house for Christmas.🎄
Our grandmother was an active member of the Upperville Garden Club and used to lobby for the December meeting to be at Welbourne so she could get the house decorated for Christmas!

The Upperville Garden Club decorating for their Christmas party at Welbourne. Stay tuned for their creations…..
It started with a photo shoot last fall for , and with photographer .
Lisa Harris of , now a regular guest at Welbourne, created this beautiful video from that photo shoot.

Thankful for our guests who amaze and delight us.
Welbourne last night. Pierre Bognon discussed his new book, A Tour of French History: From a Province of Rome to the Kingdom of France.
“If you are not familiar with [French] history … that should not prevent you from enjoying la belle France, but if you anchor your discovery in a historical context, your experience will be more profound and memorable. Hence this book.”

Just a normal everyday occurrence in hunt country.

Virginia Piedmont Heritage Area (VPHA) Historic Homes Dinner fundraiser last night.
Dinners were hosted in several local historic homes. The money raised goes to youth education programs that teach local history in schools across the Heritage Area.

The Scout Guide Hunt Country Volume 10 launch party Wednesday night at Glenstone Gardens. Welbourne was the location for the and photo shoots.
As part of the End Room bathroom renovation we replaced the 1980s vinyl peel-and-stick tiles with what I call “New York City pre-war brownstone bathroom” hexagonal ceramic tile.

The End Room facelift included a bathroom renovation.
We wanted a more period sink and salvaged what we thought was a suitable antique (2). But the plumber couldn’t get old pipe threads to match up with new pipe threads. With guests arriving the following day, and no time to order a “new vintage” sink, a facebook marketplace search and a quick trip to WV solved the problem (1).

In recognition of National Authors Day:
Both F. Scott Fitzgerald and Thomas Wolfe stayed in the End Room in the 1930s. They came (separately) at the suggestion (insistence?) of their editor, Max Perkins, and the invitation of our great great aunt, Elizabeth Lemmon. Perkins wanted them to spend some time in the country, away from the alcoholic temptations of city life, hoping they would be inspired to write.
Although they both wrote short stories while staying at Welbourne, in all likelihood, they encountered those same temptations….

Washing the floor in the End Room with Murphy’s Oil Soap. Three times. On hands and knees.
We opted not to sand the nearly 200 year old pine floor for fear of losing the patina. The “before and after” is remarkable - the floor readily absorbed the oil from the soap, the color is so much richer and it smells good!

The End Room Restoration Project begins in earnest. Herbert scraping and plastering.
Many know this as the Fitzgerald Room as this is where F. Scott Fitzgerald stayed during his visits to Welbourne.

How to kick off a wedding weekend with style:
Bluegrass, BBQ and taco food trucks, a tap truck, picnic tables, fire pits and heaters. Friends and family. Oh, and Welbourne, of course!
Local darling Olivia Jane Johnson and her nearest and dearest celebrate with her and her fiancé, Tim Duffy. Lucky wedding guests get to stay .
Refurbishing the End Room bath. We removed the towel racks so we could paint and found this charming wallpaper. The house has so many stories waiting to be uncovered.

The sun freshens naturally (and it’s free!). The vacuum cleaner is hard on these old rugs so a good shaking followed by a five day airing worked wonders.

While a guest of our great-great-aunt Elizabeth Lemmon, novelist Thomas Wolfe wrote to his mother on November 18, 1934 about Welbourne:
“Yes, I did make the trip to Virginia and had a fine visit in one of the most beautiful old plantation houses you ever saw.”
Today would be Thomas Wolfe’s 122nd birthday (October 3, 1900-September 15, 1938).

Guests and visitors frequently ask about the art in the Welbourne Parlour. Our four greats uncle, Hal Dulany, collected it on his travels to Europe during the late 19th C.
Today’s highlight is a copy of Portrait of Beatrice Cenci. The original is attributed to Guido Reni circa 1600.
Beatrice was a Roman noblewoman who murdered her abusive father and was executed by Pope Clement VIII in 1599. The tragic story is long and twisted if you care to learn more on Wikipedia.
I have seen this painting all my life but see it so differently now that I know her tragic story.
One-room Schoolhouse. Sketch by Henry Morland Williams, Welbourne, 1938. His great grandson, Richard Ayers, inherited his sketches and shared this with us. We presume Williams was a guest of our great grandparents. The schoolhouse still stands today in the garden.
Half the wedding guests came from Turkey, but jet lag didn’t stop them from dancing the evening away!
“Lost Generation” Authors F. Scott Fitzgerald and Thomas Wolfe Visit Welbourne. A fascinating talk given by The Virginia Piedmont Heritage Area’s Director of Education, Travis Shaw.
Travis regaled guests with the story of the platonic love affair between Scribner’s editor Maxwell Perkins and our great great aunt, Elizabeth Lemmon. It was at Perkins’ request and her invitation that Fitzgerald and Wolfe came to stay at Welbourne.
The talk was followed by a rollicking reception at Welbourne where guests walked in the footsteps of FSF and Wolfe while enjoying Manhattans and French 75 cocktails.

Why are porch ceilings painted light blue?
Popular in Southern coastal cities such as Charleston, Savannah and New Orleans, “haint blue” was thought to bring good luck and protect the home from evil spirits. The legend is that “haints” don’t like to cross water which the blue ceiling represents.

Richard Henry Dulany, 1820-1906, our great-great-great grandfather, who lived his whole life at Welbourne, would be 202 today. We honor his birthday with a social media post, something that would be completely foreign (and more than a little alarming) to him.
Welbourne is pet-friendly, but this is a first!
Meet Macey. Named for the four English friends, Muddy, Annabel, Caroline and Elspeth (the “y” added for pronunciation reasons) who gave Grandpapa the Basset Hound after the loss of his first one, Bossy, whom he adored (in the early 1960s).
Grandmama later found the ceramic one, a near perfect likeness, which has adorned the front hall ever since.
This is a butter ball. We serve these with breakfast on a Dulany silver butter plate. Our guests have all sorts of theories about how they’re made. Swipe for the answer…
Take a lump of butter and manipulate it with these paddles until you have a perfect sphere. Easier said than done!
A collection accumulated over decades, even centuries.

We are honored that The Scout Guide Hunt Country chose Welbourne for a photo shoot for Edition #10!
Featuring Jackie Wynn for Mcenearney Associates and Mo Baptiste modeling for Tri County Feeds. Fabulous photography by Ronda Gregorio and, of course, sensational styling by Nelina Loiselle.

The year of our country’s independence saw the building of the oldest part of Welbourne, the Dining Room, ca. 1775-1776. That makes the original stone part 246 years old.
Happy 4th!🇺🇸
Thank you to neighbors Pat and Brian Walker for the patriotic flowers!
I asked the if any were willing to share their plein air paintings from the day they painted .inn and I got this jewel from .
