New kitchen floor!

This project has been a long time coming. The aqua linoleum had been in place for over 60 years and was finally showing its age. We didn’t know what was underneath and hoped that we’d find a usable wood floor. But when the linoleum and subfloor were removed, we found the original floor was too beat up to resurrect AND was four inches lower in the center than at the sides.

After exhaustive research on flooring options we settled on a wood floor and spent several weeks testing different color samples. When the flooring was delivered, it had to sit in boxes in the house for three weeks to acclimate. Installation day was not without its challenges - the subfloor was bowed, the bottoms of the doors needed to be shortened and getting around the radiators was an issue, but it’s in!

The new floor is solid hickory and should last several lifetimes. Thanks !

It’s a good day for washing windows.

It’s not just about getting the windows clean. Made in the early 19th C, each pane is different. I think of the people who made them by hand. I think of all the people who have washed them before me and who looked out of them into a different world.

A recipe for Welbourne Tea Punch as published in “Hunt Country of America” by Kitty Slater, 1967:

“Mrs. Lemmon noted that Welbourne punch, first served in 1886, was “very heady.” If you’d like to judge for yourself, here’s the recipe:
3 quarts of Jamaica rum, 3 quarts of French brandy, 3 quarts of claret, 3 quarts of very strong tea, [thank heavens for that!], 3 pounds of rock candy, juice of 1 dozen lemons and 1 dozen limes. Slice thinly 3 lemons and 3 oranges to float on top before serving. Delicious with crushed ice.”
