Three rooms, one historic property above the Hudson, each with its own light and its own way of holding a moment.

The Highlands Ballroom, beneath the chapel’s original arches, is the room a wedding weekend is built around. The Grand Terrace opens the evening to the valley air, a seasonal setting for a ceremony or a cocktail hour that lingers. And the Cornerstone Room, within the former convent, offers something rarer still, hand-painted walls and stained glass, for the most intimate gatherings.

Some places are built. This one was kept.

Set on historic Fort Hill above the Hudson, once a lookout for Washington’s army, The Abbey began in 1876 as a convent, and by 1902 had become a chapel, a bell tower, and a home for the Episcopal Sisters of Saint Mary. Much of it still stands: the marble altar, the hand-carved saints, the thousand-pound bell in the belfry, the cornerstone that reads “my soul magnifies the Lord.”

Restored rather than replaced, it’s now an inn where the history is something you stay inside of, not something behind glass.
