Exciting News Since Our First Announcement!
Since announcing our September 12 North Coast Premiere screening of Abalone Stories: Loss, Connection, Renewal, we're excited to add new voices, music, and support to this special afternoon at Del Mar Hall.

We are honored to let you know that Dr. Brent Hughes, professor at both Sonoma and San Francisco State Universities, will moderate our post-film panel, along with Dr. Sara Boles of the UC Davis Bodega Marine Laboratory, who will bring her expertise in abalone research.

We're also pleased to announce The Sea Ranch Foundation as a major sponsor, with additional support from Gualala Arts Center and the Anderson Valley Brewing Company. And, Native flutist and composer Kevin Village-Stone has graciously offered to serenade us as part of the afternoon.

🌧️ El Niño and the North Bay: Prepared, Not Alarmed
Forecasters are monitoring a strong El Niño pattern developing in the Pacific. For Sonoma County, that could increase the possibility of a wetter, stormier winter—but it does not guarantee that every week, or every trip, will be rainy.

As the recent Northern California Public Media report explains, El Niño changes ocean and atmospheric conditions and can influence where winter storms travel. The effects vary from one El Niño year to another, particularly in Northern California.

For guests planning a coastal getaway:
** Check weather, road conditions and possible closures before leaving home.
** Give yourself extra daylight and travel time.
** Make sure your tires, brakes, windshield wipers and defroster are ready for wet roads.
** Pack waterproof shoes, rain jackets, flashlights, chargers, medications, snacks and water.
** Follow local guidance and never drive through flooded roads or around closure signs.
** Stay well back from the bluff edge and never turn your back on the ocean. High surf and sneaker waves can occur even when it is not raining.
** Consider travel insurance that covers weather-related interruptions.

Rain does not have to spoil a Sea Ranch visit. It can mean dramatic waves viewed safely through expansive windows, greener meadows, rainbows, a good book by the fire, board games, puzzles, leisurely meals and a restorative afternoon nap. 🎮 Fast Forward 10 Years: Pokémon GO at The Sea Ranch⁠

Ten years ago, I was wandering around Mendonoma — phone in hand — searching for those tricky little Pokémon hiding around **The Sea Ranch, Gualala and Point Arena**.⁠
⁠
It's been years since I've played. But with the **Pokémon World Championships coming to San Francisco August 28–30**, I'm thinking it may be time to give Pokémon GO another go.⁠
⁠
And apparently I'm not alone. Pokémon GO made news again this week when an outage prompted **more than 53,000 users to report problems**. Ten years later, that's a lot of people still trying to catch 'em all!⁠

So I've dusted off my original 2016 blog post for a **10-years-later update**.⁠

And if Pokémon GO happens to go down while you're visiting The Sea Ranch? No worries. We have 50+ miles of trails, beaches and tide pools, harbor seals and whales, swimming, tennis, pickleball, golf—and some pretty spectacular Pacific sunsets that require absolutely no Wi-Fi.⁠

This creature was dubbed the Sasquatch of the sea. Scientists just found it.
A decade after they vanished from the ocean, the discovery of this lost colony of sunflower sea stars offers new hope for California's kelp forests.

Over two days, divers systematically surveyed the humble cove off the coast of Sea Ranch, California using an underwater grid system. Teams entered the frigid water with flashlights, measuring reels, and little red floats to be deployed should a wild “Pycno” be found. They also had access to a new technology that allowed them to find bits of sunflower sea star DNA in environmental samples, also known as eDNA.

A decade after they vanished from the ocean, the discovery of this lost colony of sunflower sea stars offers new hope for California's kelp forests.
