Our family needs prayers right now…

Hi everyone ❤️

We wanted to take a moment to share a personal update with our Skippers family and community.

First, we want to thank our incredible employees. The last few weeks have brought a lot of unexpected changes with very little notice, and every single one of you has stepped up, adjusted, and continued to give your best. We truly are blessed with an amazing staff, and we couldn’t do this without you. ❤️

We also want to thank all of you — our customers, friends, family, and community. Skippers has gone through quite a few changes lately. We’ve had menu changes, employee changes, new babies…and now our family is facing something we never expected.

Recently, Josh was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer.

As you can imagine, this came as a complete shock and has been incredibly difficult for Josh and our entire family. We are still in the process of getting answers and working with his medical team to better understand his diagnosis and what the road ahead will look like.

There are still a lot of unknowns, so right now we are taking things one appointment, one answer, and one day at a time.

We are incredibly thankful to have an amazing medical team beside us every step of the way. For now, Josh will be out of work until further notice while we focus on getting answers, his health, and our family. Hopefully, you’ll still see him pop into Skippers from time to time to say hi when he’s feeling up to it. ❤️

Skippers will continue to be here, and our amazing staff will be working hard to keep things running. We just ask for a little patience and grace as we navigate this new chapter.

Most of all, we are asking for lots of prayers and positive thoughts for Josh. 🙏❤️

We are still parents first, raising our kids and running a business, and now we are facing something we never imagined we would have to face. We truly cannot put into words how much the love and support of our staff, customers, friends, family, and this community mean to us.

Thank you for standing beside Josh, our family, and Skippers.

So - What is a People-Powered Boat Race - you wonder?

First some details about the race coming up on July 11 at Oak Park Marina.

A Huron People-Powered Boat Race – Celebrating and Making History!

Cardboard, plastic bottles, plastic tubs, milk jugs, orange juice cartons, aluminum cans, rope, twine, duct tape, water proof glue, decals, water proof paint (decorations are nice!), flags, boas, banners, and other trimmings are just some of the materials needed to construct a floatable racing craft. You will need some sort of paddle to propel the vessel that is appropriate for you and the vessel. You could use your arms, but that may alter your balance and speed.

Using the above materials to create a fun, spirited, thematic homemade boat is just the kind of vessel that is encouraged to compete in the Huron Bicentennial People-Powered Boat Race. This event will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2026 at Oak Park Marina on the east side of Great Sodus Bay. Registration is from 9:30 11:00 am. Races will begin 11:30 am. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged. Registration is FREE!

While homemade boats – the wackier the better – are ideally what will make this day a historically memorable and even hysterically memorable event, commercial boats – kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards – are welcome. All boats must be decorated. Costumes are optional but certainly do add to the flavor of the day and your craft.

All ages may participate. There are three levels: Youth – 12 and under; Teen – 13 to 18; and Adult – 19 and up.

Prizes will be awarded in the following categories for each level: fastest; funniest; best decorated; best costume; best sinking; and most historic/patriotic.

July 11 (rain date July 12)
Oak Park Marina 6483 Catchpole Shore, Huron, NY
Registration: 9:30 – 11:00 am. Races begin 11:30 am.
All participants must race with a life jacket. Please bring your own.
