The People behind Spellbound: John 🔧🐈 🐶

If you’ve ever locked yourself out of your tiny home or found Mr. Kitty curled up somewhere he shouldn’t be, John is the one who shows up. He keeps Spellbound Springs (and our affordable housing apartments) running and looking great, handling everything from handyman repairs to filling up the soaking tubs.

Off duty, John’s an animal lover through and through. (There’s a rumor John even got to pet a raccoon🦝.) He's also a gardener and a grill master (if you’re lucky, you’ll catch one of his famous BBQs at Spellbound).

We’re so lucky to have John’s help and very grateful for everything he does around here.

“This Walkable New Mexico City Is Perfect for a Scenic Getaway,” says Yahoo Travel about Truth or Consequences, and we have to say we agree 100%.

When you stay at Spellbound Springs (located in the hot springs district), you can park your car when you arrive and not touch it again until you leave. From Spellbound you can walk downtown for galleries, fun shops and food, or just wander and take in all the funky, artistic houses and yards along the way before catching the sunset over the mesas. We’re also right by the riverfront Rotary Park, so it’s easy to take in nature’s beauty too. Walk one way for small town charm, the other for river and mesas. That’s the magic of Spellbound. ✨

These polished and stained concrete floors bring us one step closer to finishing the next affordable housing apartment. After pulling out water-damaged cabinets, broken tiles, and beat-up appliances, these floors are giving the space a massive upgrade, and they’re waterproof, sealed, and easy to clean. So grateful for the concrete artist who came out from Phoenix to help with this. We’ll share more pictures soon as the apartment comes together.

This may not look like much but it’s such an upgrade and a big relief, the fairy cottage got a brand new minisplit that’s whisper quiet and super efficient. An Update on Housing and Hospitality at Spellbound.

This photo is from when my brother and I bought the building (and yes, his beard is pretty impressive). I could not have predicted the overwhelming support and interest from our community since then. Multiple people have reached out about the apartments, and some with resources to help fund the next affordable housing project.

For anyone locally looking for housing: we currently have a waitlist for our apartments. They’re studios and 1 bedrooms. Each one has a new mini split for AC and heat, fresh paint, and new plumbing and bathroom fixtures. They’re clean and move-in ready, while other units in the complex are still under construction. We hope to have 2 more opening in the next 3 months.

To get on the waitlist, message me your full name and phone number. Another local landlord also reached out with 4 apartments available now, happy to pass along her info if you’re interested, just message us.

Spellbound Springs is our hospitality arm, open for nightly stays, and we’re always happy to give tours of both the apartments and Spellbound.

Hospitality and Housing with Spellbound Springs. This is something I haven’t shared much about, but it matters to our community and to me personally.

There’s a lot of development happening in T or C right now, and I recognize I’m part of that. From discussions with locals and the city, I know how important it is to preserve affordable housing here.

When I was putting together the development plan for Spellbound, I felt bad knowing the city needed more affordable housing, not more vacation rentals. The Hospitality and Housing Pledge is my answer to that: for every short term rental at Spellbound Springs, I’m maintaining an affordable long term rental at a nearby property (pictured, and you'll see from the ladder and tools out it's still a work in progress!)

My brother helps me run the apartments (so grateful for him, I couldn’t do this without him). We’re renovating them to provide safe, clean, affordable housing, and we accept Section 8 vouchers. Once we finish fixing up all six, I’d love to take on another affordable housing project. Last week a woman called me, desperate for housing, and we were able to line her up for one of our upcoming units. The need here is real, and I’m grateful to be able to help meet it while also welcoming visitors to this special town. 💛

We just had another last minute booking this week from guests who were camping but decided they wanted something more luxury. It was too hot out there, and they wanted a place with good AC. We’ve had that happen before too, along with a pregnant guest a while back who was very much done peeing in the woods. Others have stayed just so they could have a real shower.

I’m so honored to be able to accommodate nature loving folks and offer these amenities while still honoring our land. I also have a strong personal reason behind glamping. I love the quiet and beauty of nature, but as I've gotten older, a real mattress, air conditioning and an indoor bathroom are luxuries I really appreciate. My boyfriend doesn’t always agree with me on this, he’s always welcome to rough it in his truck at the lake instead and actually one of our guests took that a step further. She sent her husband and dog off to the lake for a “boys” weekend and had the Fairy Cottage all to herself. No regrets apparently and her husband even brought her brunch and picked her up after her glamping weekend.

This is why all the units at Spellbound have real mattresses (and I make sure the homes with sofa beds are truly comfortable), full indoor bathrooms, kitchenettes, and heat and AC. And if you want a camp fire we have you covered there too!

I love being able to share these luxuries with our guests, whatever their reason for choosing comfort. 🌵✨
