Most days, lunch comes with a screen.

Here, it comes out of a cooler. 🛶

Float down Magee’s Creek until you find a sandbar worth stopping for. Pull up. Spread out a blanket. Unwrap a good sandwich, pass the chips, and pour another cup of coffee.

Nobody is going to ask you for a quick update.

Lingering is the sport here. Stay for the cool breeze and the sun on your shoulders. For the birds overhead and the sound of water slipping past. Maybe a deer will wander down for a drink.

Eventually, you’ll pack up and paddle on.

But there’s no prize for finishing lunch first.

Float trips run 3.5–6 hours. Highly suggest leaving room in the plan for the fall picnic.

We thought we discovered this place. We were mistaken. Meet the Sandbar Society. They meet monthly. We are, apparently, on the agenda.

The Society has opinions about the leaf litter, the record collection, and the broken needle. Noted. Mostly.

The newest residence, with stained glass windows and a porch full of acorns. Built by a few of our recent guests and approved by the Society. Applications for new housing remain open.
P.S. The trail camera footage is being reviewed and will be posted in our Stories tonight.

Some guests leave a review. These ones left a village.
A curl of bark propped against an old tree, a twig ladder climbing to a second floor, pine needles for a roof. A painted snail keeping watch at the door.
Down by the creek, a moss cottage with a red heart for a window and a little gravel path leading in.
All of it built from what the woods let fall. All of it left for whoever wanders by next.

“We read, hid fairies, napped on the porch, sat at the beach and counted stars.”

That’s the whole itinerary. That’s all it ever needs to be.

Thank you, Jim and Missie. We sure are lucky to host such kind guests. The porch will be here when you come back.

October has three different skies this year, and the next few weeks give you a front-row seat to each one.

The dark week comes first. The new moon leaves the sky its darkest of the month, and if you give your eyes twenty minutes away from screens, the faint stars fill in slowly over the sandbar.

Then the Orionids, little pieces of Halley’s Comet burning up as they cross the sky. Set an alarm for the hours before dawn, bring a blanket and a thermos, and count the streaks.

Last comes the Hunter’s Moon, rising after dark and bright enough to light the creek late into the night.
