This month brings King Kamehameha Day on Thursday, June 11, a state holiday honoring Kamehameha I, the ali'i who unified the islands.

The big public celebration on this side is the King Kamehameha Day Parade in Kailua Kona on Saturday, June 6, with pa'u riders on horseback, hula halau, marching bands, and floral floats along Ali'i Drive. Kona is about a 2.5 hour drive from us, and many guests pair the parade with a stay on the Volcano side, which makes for an easy park day the morning after. View link in comments.

June is one of our favorite times of the year. Daylight runs long, and the park feels less rushed during the week. If a 3 or 4-night reset is on your mind for summer, the first half of June is our quiet window. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is about 1 mile from our front gate, so it is an easy day with no rushing to the crater. View link in comments.
