This week in Mallorca, Spain, Les Grandes Tables du Monde, the world’s most prestigious and exclusive association of fine-dining restaurants, bestowed its coveted Best Pastry Chef in the World award upon The Inn at Little Washington’s Christian Capo.

Founded in Paris in 1954, this distinguished organization brings together a select collection of the world’s most celebrated culinary destinations, each representing the pinnacle of gastronomy, gracious hospitality, and the art of entertaining. The Inn at Little Washington has been a proud member for more than three decades.

At the association’s Annual Congress, Chef Capo, the sole honoree from the United States, was among five international award recipients.

The Inn at Little Washington has earned three stars — the highest rating possible — from the Sustainable Restaurant Association’s Food Made Good Standard, a certification that makes it one of only four restaurants in America to hold the distinction.

We know autumn has arrived in Little Washington when Chef Patrick O’Connell’s iconic Apple-Rutabaga Soup makes its annual appearance.

Affectionately known here as “Liquid Autumn,” it has been a cherished seasonal tradition at The Inn for more than three decades. The soup transforms the humble rutabaga, sometimes called “the forgotten vegetable,” into something rather extraordinary. A splash of maple syrup and a hint of cayenne are two of its little secrets.

With autumn settling into the village, we’re delighted to welcome Liquid Autumn back to the menu at Patty O’s Café.

The New York City celebration of Chef Patrick O’Connell’s new memoir, Main, Middle & Gay, brought together some of the most legendary figures in American culinary history.

The festivities were graciously hosted by longtime friends Daniel Boulud and Tim and Nina Zagat at Restaurant DANIEL, a fellow Relais & Châteaux property.

Patrick and Daniel first met in Washington, D.C., in 1980, beginning a friendship that has endured for more than four decades. The Zagats share a special place in The Inn’s history, having awarded The Inn at Little Washington the only perfect score for food ever given in their famed restaurant guide.

The evening’s most delightful moment came when chefs Thomas Keller and Daniel Boulud donned Dalmatian aprons and assumed the role of Patrick’s book delivery boys, posing with stacks of his new memoir.

Autumn is falling delightfully behind in Little Washington this year.

With fall color forecast to continue well into November, we’ve been given a bit more time to savor the season.

Our iconic Liquid Autumn soup is simmering, local apple c***r is being mulled, and a few rooms still remain for one last autumn escape before the holiday season is upon us.

A little extra autumn is always welcome.
