More tomato posts! I just can’t stop myself. These Lemon and Wonder boys are spending some quality time in the oven right now. I’ll be making a tomato and bleu cheese soup with them tomorrow.

We are close to two rail trails (maybe 3). Both are in New Hampshire. Vermont has four rail trails, but they’re all a little ways away. Today we took our bikes on the Sugar River Rail Trail in Claremont. Fun and fairly flat, it’s a good place for an afternoon bike ride. And we saw this fun covered bridge. (It’s literally covering the trail, it’s impossible to miss-LOL!!!) My soundtrack for our bike rides are a bit different than my running soundtracks. I’ve kind of replaced stuff like Hamilton, Wicked and Barry Manilow-yes I used to run to Manilow-with Coheed and Pat Benatar. And basically a lot of 80’s tunes.
(Always remember to wear your helmets!!!)

One of our favorite things to do in Vermont is the Great Vermont Corn Maze! This is our 5th year doing it. It’s rough. Every year I say it’s rough. This year tho… wow…I mean I’m pretty sure I survived but only just. We started at 10:05 and finished at 2:41. Now, this maze is built on the side of a hill. So half of that time is an uphill trudge. Also. We had to ask for the hint. Not the little hint, the BIG hint. More than once. And even then we got turned around… in any case it’s always fun, and we’ll be back next year. (And I will most assuredly post again on how rough it is!!)
A wide array of emotions were felt today. LOL!!! For the record, I was NOT thumbs downing the message of diversity in my picture. I was thumbs downing because I was worn right out! One of the reasons we LOVE the Vermont Corn Maze is because of their message. And this years is something we should all be embracing. This countries best quality is our diversity. I will reiterate here that we will ALWAYS be a safe space for EVERYONE! And I’d like to think that in the end of this dark period our better angels will win.

Our grave room will be listed next week. Definitely on Airbnb, hopefully on our website. We’re so excited about this room! The Boo did all the designing and came up with the idea for this room, and I think he knocked it out of the ball park! We have a few pictures we need to hang, and we need to tidy up the bathroom. But after we get this open we will have all of our rooms open! Unlike the other two rooms we went with curtains for this room. Because our house is the delightfully quirky monster it is, we couldn’t get blinds in two of the windows, at least not with a lot of work. But we have black out curtains that work well. This is the only room I haven’t actually spent a night in, but it feels very cozy.
Little fact about me, I tend to bogart decorating jobs. I absolutely have a tendency to steamroll over the Boo when it comes to decorating. And I don’t know why. In our Montana B and B he designed what became my favorite guest room. So much so that when we designed our living quarters we used the same color palette for our living room. And he did an outstanding job on this room as well. It was designed to feel like you are in a graveyard. And it does feel like that, but it also feels very cozy. So it’s a very cozy graveyard. 🪦

Your innkeepers had a date night tonight! Bellows Falls Opera House was showing Grease. Of course we had to go that movie is a classic. And of course most of us in the audience were singing to all the songs! Went to Dari Joy after to have ice cream cones. Super fun night. Mildly disappointed we didn’t see anything odd on the way home, but what are you gonna do…

Lesie Knope quoted Theodore Roosevelt saying “Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is a chance to work hard at work worth doing.” I feel so grateful everyday that we have our monster house and our B and B. It is definitely hard work keeping our wee scary business running smooth. We are not only the maids, cooks and bakers. We are also the gardeners and the maintenance folks. We’re bookkeepers, painters and dishwashers. And right now we are also micro farmers, what with all our tomatoes coming up at once. We wouldn’t trade this for anything.
A little of what we’ve been doing today! I’ve been doing some mid summer gardening-I’m happy to report MOST of my plants are still living!!! YAY!!!! And my butterfly garden is really doing great this year. The Boo has been putting up tie backs and fussing with the lock in our grave room. (And roasting more tomatoes!)

It’s time to roast my tomatoes!! I’ve been in NYC the last three days (seriously lots of fun, but also maybe I’ll do a later post delving deeper into why I try so hard to make sure all of our guests feel at home-hint, it all stems from how horrible of a traveler I am. These last couple days in NYC reminded me of that.) Anyway, I haven’t been home to roast anything so my tomatoes have been just chilling and ripening. This is why I love tomatoes. If you know there will be issues, just pick them early. It’s all good. I do still have two fully green ones that I’ll be frying at some point.
Also???? We picked a few of our very own peaches!! I think they’ll end up in a bread. Pictured are the peaches and also one of my black krimm tomatoes. As it has been sitting on our counter it actually looks pretty nice 🙂

Recent tomato haul. I’m pulling all my Black Krimms because they are ripening and rotting. We don’t like that. But also…we had a guest a few weeks ago who said her father wrote a story based on the many different names given to heirloom tomatoes and honestly, I want to read that story! We have wonder boys and lemon boys and sun golds or sun sugars (I don’t remember what I got… LOL!)
Anyway, our guests can expect the little tomatoes on their omelettes. I’m gonna roast and freeze my wonder boys. The lemon boys are still all green.

“Today is August 04, 2026…” So starts the 3rd paragraph from “There Will Come Soft Rains” by Ray Bradbury. This is the second last story in the book The Martian Chronicles. One of my favorite books, and “There Will Come Soft Rains” is my favorite story from that book.
I always encourage reading. We have books all over our house and I am always telling guests, please, if you start a book take it with you. (Except Make Way for Ducklings-do NOT take that one…again) Literacy rates in this country are on the decline. This is not the sign of a healthy society. Not at all. Let’s all work to reverse this really ridiculous and honestly pretty scary trend.
I ask that you take this day, August 4, 2026, to pick up the Martian Chronicles and read a damn fine story. Or better yet, start the book from the beginning. The whole book is damn fine.

Today we drove to Robinson Farm Vt in Woodstock and had lunch at Green Mountain Gumbo food truck. As many of you know, we spent the month of November last year in southern Louisiana and went back for the month of April. We definitely enjoyed ALL the food!! Enough so that we brought 8 pounds of churice sausage home with us. This place is definitely legit, and reminded me that I almost ALWAYS had to give most of my food to the Boo because I cannot handle the heat. I had chicken and sausage jambalaya and the Boo had gumbo (and half of my jambalaya-it was delicious, but also, I’m a lightweight!!)
I enjoyed a second lunch at my work picnic. We had pizza from Windsor Pizza Chef. Which is delicious and close to the B and B. We love our local restaurants!
For dessert we made sundaes! All in all a fun food day!!!!
