Did you know Wisconsin Dells’ iconic Duck tours started back in 1946? 🚤🌲

After WWII, surplus Army DUKW amphibious trucks (“Ducks”) were repurposed into sightseeing rides—rolling through rugged north-woods-style trails and then splashing straight into the Wisconsin River and Lake Delton. The very first tours launched in August 1946, sparked by local entrepreneur Melvin Flath (with veteran Bob Unger bringing a surplus Duck to town) and made even more unforgettable thanks to scenic land donated along the original route near the Lower Dells.

Today, that classic half-land/half-water adventure still lives on with narrated, one-hour rides on restored WWII-era vehicles—bouncing along wooded tracks, then diving into the water like it’s 1946 all over again. It’s one of the defining experiences that helped shape Wisconsin Dells into the Waterpark Capital of the World.

Those famous Wisconsin Dells “Ducks” started as real World War II DUKW amphibious trucks.

Built to move troops and supplies from ship to shore, they were engineered like a 6-wheel truck and a boat in one—complete with a boat-style hull, a rear propeller, and even a tire-inflation system so drivers could soften tires for sand and rough trails, then firm them back up for pavement.

After the war, thousands of DUKWs were sold as surplus… and in 1946, Wisconsin Dells entrepreneurs repurposed them into the Duck tours that still splash down today. It’s one of the coolest examples of postwar ingenuity turning into a multi-generation Dells tradition.

What it feels like now: you rumble through wooded trails and sandstone scenery, then—without switching vehicles—splash straight into Lake Delton and the Wisconsin River. Scenic adventure + living history in the same hour.

Wisconsin Dells wasn’t always “Wisconsin Dells” 👀 In 1931, the town officially changed its name from Kilbourn to match what visitors already called it.

Back in 1856 it was founded as Kilbourn City—a railroad and real-estate venture named for railroad president Byron Kilbourn. The area’s fortunes were tied to a Wisconsin River rail crossing so closely that when the route shifted, people even moved buildings from nearby Newport to the new hub site. The name was shortened to Kilbourn in 1895… but the scenery had a bigger story.

“Wisconsin Dells” points straight to the real star: the Dells of the Wisconsin River—those dramatic, river-carved sandstone narrows that drew travelers long before waterparks. Even the words carry the history: “Dells” traces to the French dalles (rocky passages), and “Wisconsin” comes from an Algonquian name often interpreted as “stream of red stone,” a nod to the reddish sandstone cliffs.

By the time the city made it official in 1931, the Dells brand was already famous—helped along by H.H. Bennett’s photos that introduced this landscape to the wider world.
