Ever walked through a “secret-feeling” gorge where the air stays cool and the rocks glow mossy green?

Parfrey’s Glen State Natural Area (1377 County Rd DL, Merrimac, WI) is a narrow sandstone gorge studded with quartzite pebbles, with a little stream running along the floor—quiet, shaded, and wildly photogenic even on warm days. It’s also Wisconsin’s first designated State Natural Area, tucked just east of Devil’s Lake State Park (and near Ice Age Trail access), so it’s an easy add-on to a Dells getaway.

Quick tips for a smoother visit:
• Arrive early on weekends for the most peaceful “glen to yourself” vibes
• A WI State Park vehicle sticker is required for the parking area
• Wear shoes you don’t mind getting a little wet—stream crossings and slick stone happen
• If you’re coming through the Baraboo–Merrimac corridor in 2026, plan a little extra drive time due to road work

Squeeze in One Last Summer Adventure! ☀️🏕️

Before the school bells ring and the fall schedules get hectic, take a well-deserved break in Wisconsin Dells!

Late August is an absolutely beautiful time to camp at Bonanza, with warm days perfect for the waterparks and crisp evenings made for campfires.

Plus, there are only a few days left to catch the FREE live music daily at Elm Street Plaza! The summer concert series wraps up on August 31st, so now is the time to enjoy a lovely evening downtown.

Trade the homework for some s'mores and let's make a few final summer memories together!
