If three photos could come anywhere close to epitomizing the Complete Fly Fisher experience, it might just be these. You're looking at three generations of a Florida family—Ron Sr., Ron Jr., and Hayden—who have been making an annual pilgrimage to the Big Hole Valley for well over a decade. These pictures were all taken during their most recent visit in early June.

Facilitating family memories that last more than one lifetime is a privilege the staff and guides at Complete Fly Fisher never take for granted. We take pride in the fact that so many multi-generational family and friend groups come back to us, year after year. It doesn't take long before they begin to feel like our own extended family. Given that CFF has been hosting trips like these for nearly 60 years, you could say that our masterpiece is a perpetual work in progress. We wouldn't have it any other way.

In our last post we suggested that we wouldn't make this week all about Ken, pictured here in photos over the past handful of years.

We lied.

Not on purpose, mind you. We figured we had run the string on Ken photos. After all, Ken is but one member of a family & friend group that has taken over the lodge for week-long stays over the past decade or so. But then Complete Fly Fisher's head guide, Max, sent us this batch of pics with a note that speaks to something that's hard to articulate: the bond that develops between a guide and a long-returning client.

"Ken and I always fish together … this is the first year I haven’t guided him since his first year. We’re both suffering from a bit of separation anxiety, lol."

Max is sidelined from guiding this season as he recovers from shoulder surgery. For a fella who's been rowing and wading alongside clients at CFF for the better part of three decades, you might figure that he'd enjoy a bit of time away from the daily grind of a long season that offers precious few days off. Nope.

Max is champing at the bit to get back on the water, and not just because it's his job. He treasures the bond that forms when two people join forces, year after year, in service to a shared goal. It's a bond that is lit by the good days, but truly forged in the tough ones.

It's a bond that forms when shared experience creates a dynamic that looks and feels an awful lot like family. And family is what you become when you choose to spend your precious time with us on the banks of the Big Hole River.

1) It's a gorgeous day
2) He's fishing the Big Hole River in Montana
3) He just caught a nice chonk of a brown on a big dry fly (golden stone)
And ...

About a year ago, CFF guide Max Lewis received a text from a client he had guided the previous summer. The client was new to fly fishing but under Max's tutelage had learned quickly and enjoyed the kind of action for which the Big Hole is renowned. Now, that client was seeking advice on the kind of gear he should purchase to continue his newfound hobby.

Last summer, the client returned, but hadn't had the chance to make those acquisitions. Again using CFF's line of top-shelf gear for clients, he and Max went back at it. And this time, he came back with an absolute whopper of a tale. Click the link in the comments for the full story.

Paul is a CFF regular who bookended his recent stay with these two fine specimens. The Day One bruiser is a 21" brown caught on the Big Hole, and the Day Five tank is a two-footer caught on the upper Beaverhead, just below the dam. Streamers did the trick for both fish.

To notice things you had forgotten you were capable of noticing — the rhythm of a cast finding itself, the way a trout rises through water so clear you see the take a half-second before you feel it, the sound of current moving over stone in a pattern that has been playing here long before there was anyone to listen.

And when you're not wading, you're drifting. As you drift down the river at the pace the water allows, the worries you carry in your daily life slip away into the current and the rocks, and the wind and the water wash something clean in you. Time stops because it simply doesn't matter anymore."
