THINGS TO SEE WHILE AT THE REEF HOTEL:
ANGLO AMERICAN ART DECO

Did you know the Art Deco style turned 100 last year? And there’s a very fine example of it in the vicinity of The Reef Hotel?

At 44 Main Street, you’ll find the former HQ of Anglo American, with its imposing sandstone façade. It was commissioned by Sir Ernest Oppenheimer in the 1930s and is widely regarded as exemplary corporate Art Deco.

THINGS TO SEE WHILE AT THE REEF HOTEL: GANDHI SQUARE

You don’t have to go far to see amazing things while at The Reef Hotel. The area we’re based in, Marshalltown, is packed with things to see.

Gandhi Square, named for Mahatma Gandhi, the Indian nationalist and civil rights leader, is a great place to start.

Here, at Main Street, you’ll find a plaza that also serves as a transport and retail hub. And a reminder of Gandhi’s contribution to the struggle in SA. He had legal offices near the square and lived in the country for 21 years.

When people diss our area, Marshalltown, without even having visited it, we often reply: “How bad it can it be with a Woolworths Food Store on our doorstep?!"

It takes a village to raise a child.

And it takes a lot of effort and pride to keep what sometimes feels like a village, Marshalltown, clean. Our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributes to it.

The best art often confronts social realities head on.

And that's exactly what Thokozani Mthiyani's exhibition, “Residuals: A Study in Flesh, Form and Fracture”, does with great sensitivity and compassion.

You can catch it at Asisebenze Art Gallery (34 Loveday Street, Marshalltown, a five-minute walk from The Reef Hotel) until this Friday, 6 March.

Johannesburg is a city of industry and we used that as a design inspiration, industrial chic, for The Reef Hotel.

From the Escape Restaurant & Bar and Sky Lounge to the photographic wallpaper in the rooms, it’s all about the energy of this remarkable city.

MARSHALLTOWN SHOUTOUT – BRIDGE BOOKS

Things are looking up at the Barbican Building (more than 80 years old) on the corner of President and Rissik streets in Marshalltown (less than a 10-minute walk from The Reef Hotel).

We love the recently installed neon sign (see last pic), and Bridge Books on street level, with its focus on new and used African literature, is always worth browsing for a read or two.
