Our story
Dieu-Donnee River Lodge was established in 1986 by the current owners. Wim & Antoinette Meyer with their two daughters Jacqueline and Angelique re-located from Gauteng where Wim was a technical engineer and Antoinette in the banking industry. They bought the vacant piece of land next to the river in Southport and over the years changed their private residence into a successful Guest house. They called it Dieu-Donnee (French) which means “Gift from God”. Foundations were dug and the wet work completed during July and August 1989 and the family settled in the end of 1990. They enjoyed the undisturbed nature with lots of wild life and only 800 meters away from the beach. Both their dreams came to pass as the owners always wanted to stay on the coastline and next to a river. Wim with lots of talent completed the house and designed the garden with garden paths, wooden decks, water features, interesting outlook posts and a solar heated swimming pool. During November 1998 Dieu-Donnee River Lodge were registered as a guest house and open 24 hours a day for business to welcome guests from local and abroad. Soon an outside dining room was needed to cater for the guests and a conference hall for small functions. To be environmental friendly a well operating recycle system was put in place for effluent water, garden refuse, paper and metal and a generator to take care of all power failures. Dieu-Donnee boasts a Rainwater harvest system that can store up to 100 000 liters of potable water. Apart from the rain water harvesting it can also recycle swimming pool water through a filtration and sterilizing process enabling us to have enough potable water during water cuts or severe droughts. It just feels so good that other people can also enjoy the peace and beauty of the property. For many business men and travelers over the past years, Dieu-Donnee became a second home where they can rest, relax and continue with their journey. Dieu-Donnee River Lodge is 3 star graded by the Grading Council of South Africa and a member of NAA-SA. We continue looking forward to welcoming guests at Dieu-Donnee River Lodge and to fulfill their expectations.
