Duifieklip (named after the appropriately named rock in front of the house) is a beachfront house, located less than 50 meters from the high tidal line and has beautiful views of the ocean. Over 50 species of (sea, land and water) birds have been observed in the indigenous garden and along
the beach area in front of the house. We enjoy walks on the beach and in the hills behind Hannasbaai. The bay, called Hannasbaai, is particularly calm, which allows for canoeing or kayaking, but only when the South-Easter is not blowing or threatening. One could occasionally come across seals, dolphins and whales (Southern Right and Humpback) and various other types of sea-life while on the water, but these could also be observed from Duifieklip. Duifieklip faces north, towards the sea, which ensures that the stoep in front of the house is shielded against the southerly winds; even during the famous Cape South-Easter wind’s seasonal occurrence. The greater St Helena Bay has a rich history, dating from the early Khoi settlements along the coast, the frequent visits by early Portuguese explorers searching for a sea route to India and a later British base. Various people passed through the area (whilst some settled) over many centuries and they have all contributed to the colourful local population in the area. There is much to experience and explore, considering that the economy of the area is still heavily dependent on various types of fishing activities. With some luck you may experience a snoek run in the area, with well over a 100 snoek boats departing from the St Helena Bay harbour and returning with their catch – snoek can then be bought in the harbour area. In the area around Hannasbaai a visit to Veldrif and the Bokkom Boulevard (and a boat excursion up the Berg River), a visit to the West Coast Fossil Park, dining in some of the excellent restaurants in Paternoster, bird watching in the Rocher Pan sanctuary, a long walk along the “golden mile’ linking Shelley Point and Britannia bay or a dip in the (chilly) waves along the same stretch of beach, could be some of many activities to explore. The Saint Helena Bay area is quite arid, which means that there is ample sun; even during the winter months!
