After receiving a shocking report from one of our members eyewitnessing this, this morning it pushed me to anger and tears. I feel compelled to write this!!!!
*The Honorable mayor*
*Subject*: *Urgent Action Required to Address Speeding and Wildlife* *Fatalities on our roads both Bredasdorp to Struisbaai road and roads in Struisbaai, Agulhas and Suiderstrand*.
I am writing on behalf of concerned residents and wildlife advocates in the Struisbaai area to express our deep concern regarding the increasing number of wildlife fatalities caused by reckless speeding.
This road has become a danger zone not only to our cherished wildlife but also to residents and visitors who care about the natural heritage of our region. Sightings of injured or killed animals—including Baboons, snakes, birds, owls , bokkies, Jackals, tortoices to name but a few, have become distressingly frequent, and each incident underscores a serious neglect of both traffic enforcement and environmental responsibility.
We formally demand the following immediate actions:
Installation of effective traffic calming measures, including speed bumps, rumble strips, and clear wildlife crossing signs.
Increased law enforcement presence or speed monitoring cameras in known high-risk areas.
Designated wildlife crossings or corridors in collaboration with conservation authorities.
Public awareness campaigns highlighting the dangers of speeding and the value of preserving local wildlife.
These measures are not only reasonable but necessary to uphold your office's responsibility to protect both the people and biodiversity of Struisbaai / Bredasdorp.
We respectfully urge your office to treat this as a priority and engage with local stakeholders, including wildlife organizations and community representatives, to implement sustainable solutions. Time is of the essence.
We await your response and are available for a meeting to discuss this and get action.
Just this morning, it was carnage again on Struisbaai to Bredasdorp road cars racing in excess of 140 to 160 kms per hour????
Rather rhan getting up earlier and driving at the speedlimit people chose to drive like maniacs.
A white bakkie was seen obliterating a Jackal.
This occurred just a little further away where its mate was also killed!!!....
NO MORE.!!!!!!!
I ask our community to share this far and wide please. We are their custodians. Thank you so much!!!
