Respect Our Parries

Many of us have grown up fishing in Struisbaai Harbour, and we want the next generation to enjoy it too.

Recently, we’ve noticed more young anglers intentionally targeting our resident Parries (short-tail stingrays), particularly at night.

This is not about saying fishing is wrong. Fishing is an important part of our community and heritage.

Our concern is that the harbour’s resident Parries are not a target species. When lines break, hooks and fishing line can remain embedded in these animals, causing unnecessary pain, injury and stress.

If you’re looking for the thrill of catching fish, there are plenty of opportunities along our beaches and rocky coastline where anglers can responsibly target wild fish in their natural environment.

Let’s keep the harbour a safe place for these incredible animals that have become part of Struisbaai’s identity.
