Relax by the pool, explore nature, or unwind at the spa, it's the ideal setting for unforgettable memories. The Wilderness Hotel is situated almost in the very centre of the Garden Route – it’s about 45 minute’s drive to both Mossel Bay and Knysna, and a little less than an hour to Oudtshoorn in the Klein Karoo, so it’s perfectly placed for families who want to explore the area, and also for sport

s teams and businesspeople. The Wilderness is also situated on the western side of the Garden Route National Park – which stretches all the way to the Tsitsikamma – and it boasts some of the Park’s finest attractions, including some of its most popular short walks and trails. It would be difficult to find any village anywhere that offers the range of habitats that Wilderness does: with its beaches, wetlands, forests, grasslands and rivers, the bird list for the area contains at least 300 species, and you’re almost guaranteed some fantastic sightings of kingfishers, Knysna loeries, narina trogons, fish eagles, only to name a few. For mountain bikers, we’ve got the back roads in Wilderness, the Seven Passes Road from George to Knysna, and the fantastic trails just along the N2 at Knysna and Plett to explore – and there are many other interesting, scenic, and sometimes challenging routes in the area. For golfers, of course, The Wilderness Hotel is central to more than a dozen of the country’s top courses – including Pinnacle Point in Mossel Bay, Oubaai and Fancourt in George, Simola and Pezula in Knysna, and Goose Valley in Plett. The bedrooms are large and spacious: Standard rooms are fitted with twin single beds, Double rooms with king-size beds, and Double extra rooms with twin king-size beds. Each family room has four single beds. No doubt one of our biggest attractions will be our spa – which also opened this week, and which offers massages, manicures, pedicures, wraps, facials and a heated swimming pool

HERITAGE MONTH | HIDDEN GEM: THE MAP OF AFRICA

One of Wilderness's most unusual landmarks isn't a monument built by people — it was created by the landscape itself.

At the Map of Africa viewpoint, a bend in the Kaaimans River creates a distinctive shape that resembles the outline of the African continent.

The viewpoint looks across the Kaaimans River valley, where the river has carved its way through the surrounding landscape over time. Dense indigenous vegetation covers the slopes, creating the green outline that makes the natural formation so recognisable.

The Kaaimans River itself has played an important role in the area's development, forming part of the network of waterways that connects the forests, wetlands and coastline around Wilderness.

Today, the viewpoint is one of the Garden Route's most distinctive scenic stops — a striking example of how geology, water and vegetation can combine to create something unexpectedly familiar.

HERITAGE MONTH | THE STORY OF ANEW RESORT WILDERNESS 🏨

Before it became ANEW Resort Wilderness, this landmark property had already been welcoming travellers for more than a century.

The property’s origins date back to the early 1900s, when a farmhouse in Wilderness was converted into a boarding house for holidaymakers. In 1924, it was upgraded and became known as The Wilderness Hostel, establishing its place as one of the area’s early hospitality landmarks.

Its reputation grew throughout the 1930s and 1940s, as Wilderness developed into a popular holiday destination. The hotel was also the setting for important meetings in the late 1930s that contributed to the formation of what is now South African Tourism.

Then, in 1947, the property welcomed a particularly notable guest. During the British royal family's tour of South Africa, Princess Elizabeth, who would later become Queen Elizabeth II, visited the Wilderness area with her family.

The property has continued to evolve through the decades, including rebuilding following a major fire in the mid-1980s, before eventually becoming part of the ANEW Hotels & Resorts portfolio on 1 October 2025.

Today, ANEW Resort Wilderness carries forward the legacy of a property that has been part of the Garden Route’s hospitality history for more than 100 years.
