The thing you have to get used to, when growing a forest, is that it changes...

Our first syntropic forest in Lightning Ridge does NOT look like picture this anymore - and somedays I mourn the loss of the earlier versions of the forest - while celebrating the incredible version I'm wandering in.

No one talks about the grief that comes with growing a forest.
When we experience the evolution of anything, we are inviting the possibility of loss..this is true of all relationships, including those we have with plants.

In semi arid Australia we are somewhat immune from the experience of this as we don't have the same seasonal shift that happens in more temperate climates with deciduous species everywhere reminding us of this change.
Our trees grow slowly and the creep to drought is slow - so we aren't as used to the rapid change you experience in a deliberately planted forest.

It's a beautiful tension to be aware of, in the stewardship dynamic.

Despite this grief and mourning and possibility of loss - growing forests is one of the most rewarding, liberating and educational experiences available in life.
