TODAY WE REMEMBER THE FEW...
On 15 September 1940, an intense air battle was fought between the Luftwaffe and the Royal Air Force. Now celebrated as Battle of Britain Day, on that date, the Luftwaffe launched its largest and most concentrated attack against London in order to force the RAF into a battle of annihilation. The German objective was to gain air superiority over the English Channel and allow the invasion of England, Operation Sea Lion, to proceed.
During the course of the day, which lasted over 10 hours, around 1,500 aircraft took part in the air battles. The action was the climax of the Battle of Britain. The RAF's Fighter Command defeated the German raids; the Luftwaffe formations were dispersed by an increasing cloud base and failed to inflict severe damage on the city of London. Losses to the Luftwaffe were devastating. In the aftermath of the raid, Operation Sea Lion was postponed. Having been defeated in daylight, the Luftwaffe turned its attention to the Blitz night campaign, which lasted until May 1941.

During the Battle of Britain, the RAF lost 544 airmen, many as young as just 18 & 19 years of age. 422 airmen were also wounded during the campaign.

This compared to the 2,500 Luftwaffe aircrews killed during this same time.
