Mark and I have been enjoying getting out on the bikes this winter. The incentive to get some miles in the legs before our gravel bike packing trip from Lisbon to Lagos in March. Bikes and route to be supplied by . Yesterday was a perfect weather day and we rode a well ridden route to Rhosneigr along the inland sea and across Cymyran and back along minor roads and greenlanes through Capel Gwyn. Well that was the plan! For this route you must always check the tides! Which of course we know but the sun was shining and we were eager! We ended up doing it in reverse, but not until we had done some leg sapping wave dodging beach riding. This is really fun beautiful ride, the route is in the photos. A friend of mine says you are only ever a bike ride away from happiness and riding local on beautiful Ynys Mon this January has confirmed that for me

Our first ‘Homemade Yoga Retreat’. And what a joyful January weekend. A group of yoga teachers came together to share their practice and enjoy Rhoscolyn at this peaceful time of year. The weather offered a hint of spring, and gave us a sense of what’s to come while gathering homegrown veg and herbs. Winter bounty feels especially valuable! This weekend we cooked for the retreat with leeks, chard, crown prince squash ( in 3 different recipes!), winter salad leaves, watercress, parsley and apples. We even managed to find some dainty edible violas to decorate the salad.

For my 40th Birthday Mark gave me an Orchard. The idea being that each year would bring something to be thankful for. 15 years on ( disclaimer…..the first year was spent clearing the land!) it is a bumper year. With the best plums yet. The orchard feels like a special place, Bruce helps look after it, pruning the trees and encouraging the wildflowers, hopefully it will continue to grow and become an established place at Cerrig yr Adar

We celebrated two 80th birthdays last week with the return of the Shell Pensioners Walking Group. For the last 13 years the group have been staying at Outdoor Alternative, with a preference for the lower bunkbeds and full catering by Jacqui and the catering team it really seems to work. With the possibility to set stunning walks of various lengths and the comfortable conservatory to gather for pre dinner drinks, chat and games we hope to welcome them back into the future.

My cousin tells me I post lots of sunny photos of Rhoscolyn. This is true, but there again this part of Anglesey does seem to get more than its fair share of sunshine*. There is something truly uplifting about getting out after the storm has past. My walk today, the dampness, the light, the views, transported me back to when we were kids and that sense of freedom and release at being able to get out and roam on our patch. *But back to sunshine, Chris has just written a blog about what we are doing with all this sunshine here at Outdoor Alternative, head to our website (link in our bio) to find out more
