Everest Expedition | May 29, 1953 🏔️

73 years ago today, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first people to stand on the summit of Mount Everest.

That same night, Chris Briggs, grandfather of current owners Rupert & Nick, received a phone call that the whole country had been waiting for: confirmation of the successful ascent. The Pen y Gwryd Hotel (or ‘PyG’) was the second to know, right after The Times, who had sponsored the climb.

Chris opened a bottle of champagne, woke up the guests, and brought everyone downstairs to celebrate. No one seemed to mind that it was the middle of the night, some even climbed Snowdon to light a beacon in honour of the moment. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Since the 1950s, kids aged 13 and under who stay at the PyG, conquer Yr Wyddfa/Snowdon and answer a few mountaineering questions get to sign the book, receive a silver ice axe pin, and enjoy a drink from a historic Everest Teams tankard.

Last summer, Chris 'Flamebaster' Roberts teamed up with our chef Gareth Dwyer at the PyG to create an unforgettable Welsh lamb trio. The dish consisted of roast rump, braised shoulder, and crispy breast of lamb, accompanied by fondant potato, carrot puree, and a red wine jus.
