This Pride Month, we reflect on the creative legacy of Fallingwater and the people who helped shape its story, especially Edgar Kaufmann jr.

As the only child of Edgar and Liliane Kaufmann and the person who in 1963 entrusted Fallingwater to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, Edgar Kaufmann jr. played the primary role in preserving one of America’s most iconic works of architecture. A scholar, curator and modernist thinker, he was deeply engaged in the worlds of art, design and architecture throughout his life.

Edgar Kaufmann jr. is recognized as a q***r figure whose contributions helped shape appreciation for 20th-century arts and design. He spent much of his life with designer Paul Mayén, his longtime partner, whose work at Fallingwater included the design of the Visitor Center.

Fallingwater today honors that spirit by welcoming diverse perspectives through our education programs, residencies and creative initiatives.

Happy Pride from all of us at Fallingwater. 🌈

Bomber Down!

Retired Park Ranger Rick Lewis will be presenting this true story of a B-52 bomber that crashed in a snowstorm on Big Savage Mountain in 1964. Many local people played a role in the massive search for the plane and its crew, four of whom had ejected prior to the crash. Fallingwater from above! ...So special!

Today is International Museum Day, and this year’s theme, “Museums Uniting a Divided World,” reminds us of the important role cultural institutions play in bringing people together.

At Fallingwater, we are proud to serve as a welcoming space for visitors from around the world to have a shared experience through art, architecture and nature. Museums are places of education and discovery. They encourage curiosity, foster dialogue and provide opportunities for the free exchange of ideas.

As a cultural landmark and community resource, Fallingwater remains committed to creating meaningful experiences that inspire understanding and connection for all who visit.
