Apostle Islands National Lakeshore covers 69,540 acres across 21 islands. The furthest distance in the park is 40 miles across Lake Superior from Long Island to Outer Island. All that distance can make the park challenging to visit. Many authorized tour operators offer guided services that help visitors make the most of their time in the Lakeshore. For a list of providers, visit: https://www.nps.gov/apis/planyourvisit/commercial-services.htm.

Make plans to stay with us and experience the sea caves covered in ice on Lake Superior. We suggest a visit in the next couple weeks. Book direct or give us a call 715.682.3590.

Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is expected to open the ice caves near Meyers Beach for visitation beginning on Feb. 16, 2026, if current ice conditions remain stable. The ice caves remain closed until Feb. 16. The Meyers Beach parking lot is currently closed to vehicle traffic and parking. Wisconsin DOT has prohibited parking on Hwy 13. Beginning Feb 16, visitor access is via county-run shuttles.

This winter event occurs only when conditions meet minimum safety thresholds. Park officials stress that public safety is the highest priority and conditions can change rapidly. Visitor access may close with little notice if conditions deteriorate.

Trip Planning:
Visiting the Apostle Islands ice caves is a stunning but challenging winter adventure. Be ready for a 2–6 mile round trip hike on uneven lake ice with no shelter, water, and limited cell service. Dress for harsh winter conditions. Standing water on top of the ice is possible. No on-site parking is available at Meyers Beach—visitors must shuttle from off-site locations to the trailhead. A $5 per person/day fee (ages 16+; under 16 free) must be paid online. Additional fees apply for off-site parking and shuttles. Parking and shuttle fees are separate from the NPS Ice Caves event fee and are not charged by the National Park Service.

Conditions can change quickly. Closures may happen anytime for safety. Always check official updates before you travel: go.nps.gov/IceCaves, call the ice line at (715) 779-3398 x3, or visit facebook.com/apostleislandsnps

We are a perfect place to stay to explore the Bayfield area and the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore

Apostle Islands National Lakeshore was recently featured in Forbes as one of “7 U.S. National Parks That Are Actually Better in Winter.”

Each winter, Lake Superior reshapes the shoreline — forming dramatic ice, frozen waterfalls, and striking patterns along the sandstone cliffs. The season brings a quieter, more contemplative way to experience the park, when the scale of the landscape and the power of the lake are especially clear.

Even when conditions don’t allow access to the well-known sea caves, winter at the Apostle Islands still offers unforgettable experiences. Hiking to overlooks above the caves, snowshoeing through snow-covered forests, and photographing Lake Superior in its coldest season reveal a side of the park that feels raw, still, and uniquely Wisconsin.

The leaves are popping and peak this weekend. It’s a great time to get outside! We recently took a drive on County C over to and discovered it’s a great scenic drive to enjoy nature’s pallet of colors. Hit Siskiwit River falls and Lost Creek Falls and stop at the few of our favorites stops.
