The Bailey House

The Bailey House The Historic Bailey House was built in 1902 for a Backus founding father, John Bailey, and his wife, Jennie (Burnside) Bailey and their family. W.

John was the last white man welcome on the Ojibwe reservation at Walker, Minnesota and he also smoked the last peace pipe shared between a white man and the tribes. Among his many enterprises, John was a merchant by trade, and owner of J. Bailey & Company. There, he bought and sold everything from meat and blueberries to logs and postage stamps. The home stayed in the family until 2008 when it was renovated and restored.
