When the insects become unbearable, the herd will instinctively gather along the marshes and along the waterfront to catch the strong ocean winds, which blow the pests away and provide much-needed relief. Come to Chincoteague and enjoy island life!

The Blue Crab (Callinectes sapidus), whose Latin name translates to "beautiful savory swimmer," is a highly territorial coastal crustacean famous for its striking sapphire-blue limbs and unique biological quirks. You can easily tell their s*x because females sport bright red tips on their claws (resembling nail polish), while males possess entirely blue claws. Unlike bottom-dwelling crabs, they are agile swimmers that use a paddle-like fifth pair of legs called swimmerets to slice through the water. They are opportunistic predators equipped with a set of asymmetric "crusher" and "cutter" claws, and they even possess internal teeth inside their stomachs (a gastric mill) to grind down hard shells. Over their lifetime, blue crabs frequently molt to grow—a process during which they can completely regenerate lost limbs—and females will mate only once in their lifetime, right after their final molt while being protected by a male in a cradling embrace known as a "doubler."

The Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) is a masterfully adapted predator that stands up to 4.5 feet tall with a 6.5-foot wingspan, yet weighs a mere 5 to 6 pounds due to its hollow bones. This remarkably lightweight bird utilizes a specialized S-shaped neck vertebrae that acts like a spring-loaded harpoon to launch lightning-fast, telescopic strikes, allowing it to impale fish, snakes, and rodents—though it occasionally risks choking by attempting to swallow prey too large for its neck. Equipped with excellent night vision for nocturnal hunting, the heron also features a built-in cleaning system of "powder down" chest feathers that crumble into a dust used to absorb fish slime, which it then combs away with a fringed middle claw. Tracing its lineage back 1.8 million years, this prehistoric-sounding bird gathers annually in massive treetop colonies called heronries to practice serial monogamy, choosing a brand-new partner every single breeding season through elaborate courtship displays.

The wild Chincoteague ponies survive by organizing themselves into tight-knit family units called bands, which typically consist of one dominant stallion, several mares, and their young foals. While the stallion acts as the fierce protector, patrolling the perimeter to defend his harem from rivals and keeping the group together. The daily routine and movements are actually dictated by a dominant lead mare, who decides when the family should head to the Assateague Channel to graze or escape biting insects. As young colts and fillies mature, they are naturally driven out of the band to prevent inbreeding, with the young males forming rowdy "bachelor bands" until they are strong enough to win a family of their own. Captain John at Snug Harbor loves tracking these distinct bloodlines and witnessing the complex social bonds between mares, foals, and rival stallions. This is one of the most rewarding parts of exploring the great barrier islands!

The Assateague Channel is the premier location to spot wild ponies and bald eagles because its rich tidal marshes and western shorelines provide their primary food source and shelter. The wild ponies spend up to 17 hours a day grazing on the abundant salt marsh cordgrass along the water's edge and gather by the breezy channel during the summer to escape biting insects, while resident bald eagles constantly patrol the fish-filled shallows and nest in the tall native pines. Beyond daily wildlife viewing, the channel is also the legendary stage for the world-famous Chincoteague Pony Swim, where the wild herd crosses the narrowest section of the water.

For an unparalleled vantage point, Snug Harbor Marina & Resort is the absolute best choice for kayak tours and kayak rentals because of its elite, unbeatable location directly on the waterfront across from the wildlife refuge. Launching straight into the primary grazing and nesting grounds eliminates travel time, keeping you instantly in the heart of the action where you can quietly paddle into shallow marsh creeks that larger motorized vessels cannot reach. Furthermore, Snug Harbor boasts the highest-quality kayak fleet on the Eastern Shore for maximum stability and comfort, paired with the island's most experienced local guides and captains, including Captain Basia, Captain Shawn.
