Did you know that great blue herons eat flounder? Wow! They are surprisingly adept at catching and swallowing these wide, flat fish. Because herons are opportunistic apex predators in shallow waters, flatfish like summer flounder (fluke) and starry flounder make up a major portion of their coastal and tidal diet—in fact, regional studies show that flounder can account for the vast majority of a coastal heron's meals. When hunting along shallow shores or mudflats, a heron will use its razor-sharp bill to spear or pinch a flounder mid-body, carry it to a bank, and repeatedly toss and dip it in the water to align the wide fish flawlessly headfirst. Thanks to a highly elastic esophagus and a windpipe completely separate from its throat, the heron can safely expand its neck and breathe while slowly gulping down a surprisingly large, flat flounder whole.

Surfer's Riptide is widely considered the main and most famous living wild stallion belonging to the southern herd on Assateague Island. This beautiful stallion inherited his facial blaze, and leadership qualities from his late legendary sire, Surfer Dude. Because he was a "buyback" foal at auction, he was safely returned to the island to live out his life completely wild in the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. Today, he fiercely guards his mares, patrols the marshlands, and has sired numerous foals, cementing his legacy as an icon of the island.
