The final week of the season is here, and things are heatin’ up on the bay.

We had a 5-man crew up from Wisconsin with us for a few days for their annual trip, and like much of this winter, it didn’t exactly start fast. The first part of the trip was a bit of a grind, but after making a couple key moves and sticking with it, the switch finally flipped.

What followed turned into an absolute donkey whack-fest. Multiple trophy-class walleyes hit the ice, along with a steady pick of quality fish that made the long days and miles well worth it. Great group of guys, lots of laughs, and we’re already looking forward to getting them back on the ice next year.

As always, with the warmer temps lately the ice conditions can change quickly, so if you’re heading out make sure you’re using caution and staying safe.

Let’s see what the last bit of the season has left in store.

This season on the bay has been one of limited success — no sugarcoating it. It’s been an absolute grind from th start. The kind of year where you question your life choices halfway through drilling your 47th hole.

We’ve officially whittled it down to the final two weeks of the season. It hasn’t been easy, but if there’s one thing about late ice, it’s that it can flip the script in a hurry.

I can honestly say no one has put more time in on the ice than I have this season. Sunrise to sunset, day after day. If time on the ice paid dividends automatically, I’d be retired by now. I haven’t seen it fish like this since I started fishing the bay. It’s been humbling, frustrating, and at times downright stubborn — but that’s fishing.

The big bites have been showing up. We’ve been sticking some quality fish and putting some really nice ones on the ice lately. When they do go, they’ve been the right ones. Fishing has been decent as of late, and historically the best couple weeks of the season are right in front of us. Conditions are lining up, fish are sliding around, and opportunity is knocking, and we’re here for it.

We’re still working for them on the bay, no doubt about it. The fish are making us earn every bite right now, but we’re staying on the move, dialing in patterns, and grinding it out. The best is still ahead of us. Things are setting up for a strong push as we move forward with less than a month left of the season.

Ice conditions have started to change with the warmer temps lately. We’re seeing more soft spots, pressure cracks opening up, and some areas getting sketchy fast. Use extreme caution if you’re heading out — check as you go, avoid known trouble areas, and don’t assume yesterday’s path is safe today.

Stay safe out there.

The past couple weeks on the ice have been a true test of patience.

We’ve been marking piles of fish — screens lit up morning and evening — but getting those walleyes to actually commit has been a different story. It’s been one of those stretches that humbles you, forces you to slow down, and really dial in the details. The kind of fishing that reminds you why it’s called fishing and not catching.

The good news? We’re finally seeing a solid uptick in activity. Fish are moving better, showing more interest, and we’re putting more bites together every trip. It feels like things are starting to line up for a really strong run here.

But what’s truly special right now is the ice.

Current ice conditions are about as good as it gets. Thick, clean, consistent ice across the bay has opened everything up. We’re not limited to spots, not picking our way around questionable areas — we can safely and confidently go wherever the fish set up.

That kind of freedom is rare. It lets us fish the best water, not just the accessible water. Smooth travel, solid footing, and the ability to cover ground and stay on active fish.

When the ice sets up like this, it changes the whole game. It gives us options, mobility, and the ability to adjust on the fly — which is exactly what you want when the bite is turning the corner.

Another day with wet conditions on the bay today that started out with a rain then slowly turned to wet snow. This year has been an interesting one with not just the conditions, but the bite as well. It has been a lackluster bite as of late with the loads of baitfish in the lower parts of the bay, forcing us north out of it to stay on somewhat of a decent bite. Colder temperatures near the end of week is a good sign of things to come. Till then, we’ll be out here grinding away at them.

Off to a nice start today.
