One of our favorite quick escapes from Silver Moon Inn is Old Man Mountain, located just down the road from our inn.
If you need a break from the crowds, this hidden gem offers incredible views overlooking Estes Park, Lake Estes, Lumpy Ridge, Longs Peak, and the surrounding mountains. The hike is relatively short, with a few route options, including a loop around the base or a steeper climb to the summit. The route to the top is a bit strenuous and includes some scrambling, but the views are well worth the effort.
Old Man Mountain is also one of the most historically significant landmarks in the Estes Valley. For thousands of years, Native American tribes, including the Ute and Arapaho, considered this a sacred place and used it for vision quests and spiritual ceremonies. Archaeological evidence found on the mountain points to its importance long before Estes Park became the mountain town we know today.
Another bonus? Since the hike is outside Rocky Mountain National Park, dogs are welcome on the trail, making it a great adventure for both you and your four-legged hiking buddy.
Whenever we need to clear our heads and step away from work for a little while, this is one of the first places we go. It’s hard to beat a short hike, fresh mountain air, and some of the best views in Estes Park.
