Peak season along Yosemite’s Northgate has an unusual set of bookends… Highway cows 🐄🍂

Here along Highway 120, hundreds of cattle share the road with visitors traveling toward Yosemite and the Sierra, a seasonal tradition the Erickson family has carried on for more than a century!

In spring, the herd heads uphill toward summer grazing grounds. Today, they’re making the return journey to lower winter pastures, marking the change of seasons in a way that feels distinctly local.

For those of us who call this corridor home, the cattle drive is part of the rhythm of life at Yosemite’s Northgate. For those of you visiting, it’sa reminder that the road to your next adventure is also someone else’s way home.

If you meet the herd, take it slow, give the cattle and riders plenty of room, and follow the crew’s directions. Enjoy this little glimpse of living local history.

She smokey!

So smokey, in fact, that the Glacier Point Road closed at 6 pm on September 23, 2026. This public safety closure is a result of reduced visibility along the road due to smoke and to safely allow firefighting operations. There are no imminent threats to infrastructure. The Four Mile Trail and Panorama Trail, providing access to Glacier Point, will remain open to hikers. Glacier Point Road will reopen when conditions allow.

There are few ways to navigate the park tomorrow:
