Once a year, the sky does something most people never actually stop to watch.

On the night of August 12 into the early hours of August 13, the Perseid meteor shower reaches its peak, and this year the moon stays completely out of the way. A new moon falls right on the peak night, which means no light competing with the sky for once, just dark, and stars, and whatever streaks across them.

The best window is after midnight, into the hours just before dawn, when the sky is at its darkest and the meteors tend to come the fastest. No equipment needed. Just somewhere quiet enough, and dark enough, to look up and actually see it happen.

This is the kind of night Joshua Tree was made for.
