A short drive into the park from Joshua Tree Oasis puts you at all three of these.

Start with Hidden Valley. It's an easy mile loop through boulders and open sky, but it gets busy fast since it's so close to the road. Go before 9:30am or after 4pm if you want it quieter, and know there's no cell service and very little shade out there, so bring water even for a short walk.

Barker Dam takes a bit longer, just over a mile, and leads to a small reservoir built from an old cattle dam, with petroglyphs carved into the rock along the way. Look, don't touch or climb on them. Parking fills up fast here between September and May, so if the main lot is full, the Echo T lot just west of it is a solid backup.

Keys View isn't a hike at all, just a short paved path up to one of the widest views in Southern California, the Coachella Valley, the San Andreas Fault, and on a clear day, the Salton Sea stretched out below. It's noticeably cooler and windier up there than the valley floor, especially in fall and winter, so a light layer is worth bringing even if the day started out warm. It's also one of the best spots in the park for sunset.

On September 22, the sun sits exactly over the equator, and for one day, light and dark come out almost even.

It's a small thing, technically. But out here, it feels like the desert exhaling before it lets fall in.

Carla, eight stays in, and you still catch things we forget to expect. Longhorn sheep wandering the property isn't something that happens every day, not even for us.

Having someone come back again and again, especially somewhere as quiet and unpredictable as the desert, means more to us than any five star rating could say on its own. You've seen this place through eight different versions of light and season, and somehow it still feels new to you every time.

There's a stretch of the year when Joshua Tree exhales. The heat breaks, the air softens, and the desert becomes the kind of place you actually want to walk through slowly.

It's also when Joshua Tree Oasis comes alive the way it's meant to, fire pit nights that don't send you running inside, a hot tub you actually want to sit in, skies you can watch for hours.

The desert doesn't ask you to do anything. That's the whole point.

You arrive as the light turns gold, and somewhere between stepping out of the car and hearing the first crackle of the fire, the noise from before just falls away.

Once a year, the sky does something most people never actually stop to watch.

On the night of August 12 into the early hours of August 13, the Perseid meteor shower reaches its peak, and this year the moon stays completely out of the way. A new moon falls right on the peak night, which means no light competing with the sky for once, just dark, and stars, and whatever streaks across them.

The best window is after midnight, into the hours just before dawn, when the sky is at its darkest and the meteors tend to come the fastest. No equipment needed. Just somewhere quiet enough, and dark enough, to look up and actually see it happen.

This is the kind of night Joshua Tree was made for.
