STAY WITH CHOICE HOTELS IN LONE PINE, CA FOR AN AFFORDABLE GETAWAY TO THIS SMALL, HIGH DESERT COMMUNITY

Hey 395ers, sharing something very interesting:

This route runs from Kanawyers, deep in Kings Canyon on the western side of the Sierra Nevada, to a point on US 395 in the Owens Valley on the eastern side. And with no road over the mountains between them, the drive swings south through Bakersfield and Mojave for 355 miles and just over six hours. No road crosses the crest of the Sierra for 137 miles, between Minaret Summit in the north and Ninemile Canyon in the south. Kings Canyon National Park has no vehicle access at all from Highway 395 on its eastern side, and the canyon of the Kings River is one of the deepest in North America, with walls rising as much as 8,200 feet. Travel safe ⛰️ 🚗

Hey 395ers, sharing some good info if you're heading into Death Valley this weekend. Here’s a quick look at what’s open, what’s closed, and a few things you’ll want to know before you go.

Travel safe ⛰️ 🚗 🏜

First, campgrounds.

Texas Springs, Stovepipe Wells Campground and Sunset are closed for the summer season.

Emigrant Campground is closed indefinitely while repairs are made to the water system, and the Emigrant day-use restrooms are closed as well.

Currently open are Furnace Creek, which is first-come, first-served during the summer, Mesquite Spring and Wildrose — although Wildrose has no water.

Thorndike, Mahogany Flat, Eureka Dunes, Saline Valley and Homestake are also open, but these are primitive campgrounds, so make sure you know what you’re getting into before heading out there.

Now for the roads.

Darwin Falls Road is closed and the National Park Service says it will likely remain that way until summer 2027. You can still park along the shoulder of CA-190 and hike in.

Hunter Mountain Road is currently closed because of extremely muddy conditions that have already left multiple vehicles stuck.

Use caution on North Highway because of loose gravel and missing shoulders.

Southern Badwater Road, from south of Badwater Basin toward Shoshone, also has loose gravel, soft shoulders, large drop-offs along the edges and some unpaved sections.

Lower Wildrose Road is open, but vehicles longer than 25 feet are not allowed.

Harry Wade Road has deep sand about six miles south of the Badwater Road junction, and the final three miles of Phinney Canyon Road are badly washed out and impassable to vehicles.

And don’t let the temperature in Beatty fool you.

Beatty is currently forecast to reach around 95 degrees Saturday, while Furnace Creek is expected to be around 109.

That’s a pretty big difference for a drive that doesn’t feel all that far.

Bring plenty of water and plan your day around the temperature where you’re going, not just what the thermometer says when you leave Beatty.

And while we’re talking about planning ahead — fuel up before you head into the park. There is fuel inside Death Valley at Furnace Creek, Stovepipe Wells and Panamint Springs, but this is a very big park and those stops can be a long way apart.

Most importantly, road conditions can change quickly.

These conditions are based on the National Park Service update from September 4, so check the park’s current conditions page the morning you leave before heading out:
