A must see on Pine Island!!

Nestled in the heart of Pine Island, the Museum of the Islands offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into the people, industries, and traditions that shaped one of Southwest Florida's most unique communities.

Established in 1990, the museum occupies the island's original public library building, which was lovingly restored by local volunteers. Inside, you'll discover exhibits featuring commercial fishing memorabilia, Calusa artifacts, shells, historic photographs, household items, pioneer tools, vintage maps, and displays highlighting Pine Island's rich maritime heritage. Each exhibit tells a story of island life through the generations.

The museum is operated almost entirely by dedicated volunteers who donate thousands of hours each year to preserve the area's history and welcome visitors.

Standard hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, with group tours available by appointment. Whether you're a history enthusiast or simply curious about Pine Island's past, the Museum of the Islands is a worthwhile stop that celebrates the community's enduring heritage.

Pine Island is one of Florida's last truly authentic coastal destinations. Instead of crowded beaches and high-rise resorts, you'll find old Florida charm, working waterfronts, nature, and friendly communities. Whether you're visiting for a day or planning a longer stay, here are ten great reasons to explore the island.

1- Old Florida Atmosphere – Experience a slower pace of life with fishing villages, local businesses, and waterfront restaurants.

2- World-Class Fishing – Pine Island is surrounded by some of Southwest Florida's best inshore fishing, with abundant snook, redfish, trout, tarpon, and more.

3- Outstanding Boating – Explore Matlacha Pass, Pine Island Sound, Cayo Costa, Captiva, and dozens of nearby islands by boat or kayak.

4- Unique Wildlife – Watch dolphins, manatees, osprey, bald eagles, roseate spoonbills, pelicans, and countless other native species.

5- Beautiful Sunsets – Enjoy spectacular sunsets over Pine Island Sound from parks, restaurants, marinas, or your boat.

6- Fresh Local Seafood – Sample fresh Gulf shrimp, grouper, stone crab (seasonally), oysters, and other local favorites.

7- Arts & Local Culture – Browse galleries, artisan shops, farmers markets, festivals, and community events that celebrate the island's creative spirit.

8- Outdoor Adventures – Hike nature trails, paddle mangrove tunnels, birdwatch, bicycle quiet roads, or simply relax in the island's peaceful surroundings.

9- Easy Access to Nearby Attractions – Pine Island is the perfect gateway to Cayo Costa State Park, Boca Grande, Sanibel, Captiva, and the surrounding waters.

10- Friendly Small-Town Hospitality – Visitors quickly discover that the island's greatest asset is its welcoming community.
