A few years ago, our family discovered Deep Creek Lake and completely fell in love with it. We wanted a place where kids could run free, parents could relax, and the whole family could reconnect away from screens and schedules.

That dream became Chalet Alpenglow, our dog-friendly lake and mountain retreat just under 3 hours from the DC area.

In West Virginia, the longest sled run on the East Coast sits inside Blackwater Falls State Park, and it brings out your inner kid fast. You grab a plastic sled and step onto the “magic carpet” lift, a slow moving belt that carries you uphill through the trees. It gives you a moment to catch your breath while you watch other riders zoom past on their way down. At the top, you slide off the belt, line up your sled, give a quick push, and take off. The run is long, wide, and a little bumpy, with enough speed to spark laughs and plenty of “oh wow” moments. You steer and slow down with your hands, feel the cold air rush by, and hit the bottom grinning. Then you hop back on the lift, which is half the fun, and do it all again. On most days, tickets cost about $30 per person for a two-hour session, which is usually plenty of time. Parking sits right next to the run, so there’s no hiking involved.

TIME: 5-8 p.m. at the Lake House (weather dependent)

Enjoy this unique opportunity to cross-country ski at night, where the Turnpike Trail will be illuminated by luminaries! The luminaries will be on from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

If snow conditions are not suitable for skiing, the luminaries will still be lit for any adventurous hikers out for a night hike. 🥾

Make sure to stop by the Lake House for complimentary s’mores and hot cocoa! ☕🍫
