In Maine, driving the “Golden Road” is about as magical as it gets, especially if you love remote places that feel far removed from the rest of the world. Beginning near Millinocket, this rugged dirt, gravel, and partly paved logging route heads deep into the North Woods, where thick forest rolls on for miles with very little sign of towns, houses, or everyday traffic. The road stretches roughly 96 miles toward the Canadian border and was built by Great Northern Paper to move timber to its Millinocket mill, replacing the old days when logs were floated down the Penobscot River. Although the road is privately owned, visitors can drive it, but logging trucks always have the right-of-way and need to be taken seriously. Cell service disappears quickly, GPS can become unreliable, and the whole trip feels quieter the farther you go. Along the way, the route follows parts of the West Branch of the Penobscot River and passes wild North Woods stops like Ripogenus Falls and Gorge, River Pond with views of Mount Katahdin, and historic Pittston Farm. It’s one of Maine’s truest backcountry drives from beginning to end.
